I watched the Fyre festival documentary on Netflix last night. It's gripping.

A guy with a vision for a sparkling sunlit time on an island.

With no actual idea how it would be done except IT WOULD BE FANTASTIC.

1.
Sold this dream to two groups of people - those who wanted it at any cost, and those who could help deliver it.

Turns out, without a plan, time, money or resources, those who invested their time & energy trying to make it work soon realised - it was never going to work.

2.
Those who saw the vision loved it (naturally) and bought into it enthusiastically.

Those trying to make it work were increasingly panicked as time to the Event ticked by with still no plan, resources or ability to deliver. Some quit.

3.
The guy in charge wouldn't accept everything wouldn't be perfect - everyone just had to work harder and believe more.

As the Event approached, storm clouds gathered, and some who were originally going to be stars of the show decided it was going to be a shitshow & bailed.

4.
When the Event itself began, it turned out people were going to a different island to the one they were shown, The island villas these folk were told were waiting turned out to be piss-filled tents.

And the people who bought tickets were now trapped on the island.

5.
The people were furious but it was too late. The people who tried to warn of impending disaster and had been ignored continued to be, and the mob grew angry.

The guy in charge flew off, leaving a broken project & angry people behind and tried another scam.

6.
People who had invested time in the project lost everything. People who saw the promise & paid into the vision saw they were conned but too late.

But more - all those people had been told by someone who told them IT WOULD BE GREAT with no idea how, or even what.

7.
I can't help feeling this is something of a parable for our times.

If there is any upturn to the parable, it's that the conman eventually got six years in jail. But those conned know he'll be back, and some can't wait.

8 and ends.
(Twitter Rule no3 - any thread *must* contain a P.S.)

At the end it becomes clear, the guy's plan wasn't to provide a glorious time for everyone - it was to monetise the idea of doing so.
