Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith wrote The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior is Good Politics. Yeah a leftist or two can write a book that makes sense.
Wherein, they identify three political arenas:

The nominal selectorate - all who can vote

The real selectorate - the people who vote for the winner

The winning coalition - People important to the winner surviving in office
The nominals are interchangeable, the reals influential, and the winning coalition is essential.

For Hypocrats, there is a HUGE disconnect between the interchangeable/influential and the essential (donors, cabal, DS). The MSM keeps the nonessentials under control.
According to the authors, the rules for the winner:

Rule 1: Keep the winning coalition small. This is accomplished with big, billionaire donors like corporations. The Googles, FBs, and Twits help to keep the nonessentials under control, as well as, being large donors.
Rule 2: Keep the nominal selectorate as large as possible. In the Hypocrat case, they must keep the flow of illegals in order to keep this rule. This allows a large field for replacements of essentials. New Clinton cannon fodder?
Rule 3: "Control the flow of revenue. It is always better to determine who eats than it is to have a larger pie from which people can feed themselves. The most effective cash flow .. is one that makes a lot of people poor and redistributes money to keep ..." essentials wealthy.
"Rule 4: Pay your key supporters just enough to keep them loyal." The essentials would rather be the ruler. The ruler's advantage is that he knows where the money is and they don't. The essentials should be prevented from shopping around for another ruler.
"Rule 5: Don't take money out of your supporter's pockets to make the people's lives better. ... Effective policy for the masses doesn't necessarily produce loyalty among essentials."
In the US, Rule 2 requires a continuous flow of the young into the influential category - the real selectorate. That is why Hypocrats have infiltrated colleges and universities. Rule 4 drives staffing the FedGov with influentials to help carry out Rules 4 and 5.
These rules help provide a framework for Hypocrat ation. Take the Wall. If they approve it, then they violate Rules 3, 4 and 5, and the supporters will look elsewhere or even kill the ruler to get a better ruler.
Their situation is that @realDonaldTrump 's infuential, the real voters, population is growing because of #TheGreatAwakeningWorldwide. To vote for the Wall, the Hypocrats will also be violating Rule 2. Rule 1 will be violated by the vanishing group of essentials (donors, etc.).
