Neko Case with Margaret Glaspy opening is the best possible way to spend the night before classes start.
Margaret Glaspy made herself a lot of new fans tonight. People talking about how great it was. I’ve been a huge fan for 2 years so this makes me happy.
Neko was of course great as well, though I wish she would rock out more, maybe sing a little less about birds and what not.

The civil rights movement was perking up in the 1930s. Between the defense of the Scottsboro Boys, cases that led to the integration of the University of Maryland and University of Missouri law schools, and other significant victories, civil rights leaders had hope for the future
As the nation turned its attention to fascism in the late 1930s and President Franklin Roosevelt began to prepare the nation for war, civil rights leaders hoped that African-Americans would see their share of economic advancement.

In 2013, 1,138 Bangladeshi workers died making your clothing. Basically, no on in America cared. But Bangladeshi workers keep fighting. We can do something about this! I wrote a whole book and multiple articles on how to help them achieve fair work!

Like, we can actually pass legislation to make corporations accountable for their supply chains, open up American courts to lawsuits over these conditions, and give workers access to the courts created to cover international trade.
We don't because we basically don't want to know enough about these workers to care. It's unacceptable. Even on the left, no one discusses how to fix the avoidable problems of global capitalism and capital mobility. Yet they are actually quite fixable!

Yoongi rolls his eyes, then sits cross-legged. His eyes take their time scanning Jimin’s face, now smiling and his head covered by the yellow blanket that he’s got wrapped around his whole frame.
“This is nice,” Jimin comments, and Yoongi can’t help but silently agree.

The mattress squeaks when Jimin shifts, and Yoongi splutters incoherently when Jimin moves to rest his head on his lap. “Your voice is so warm. Kinda reminds me of someone...can you keep talking? Or sing.”
Yoongi balks at that. “/Sing/?”

Jimin yawns. “Or anything you want. I just like this... being close. It’s been a while. Taehyung used to cuddle with me a lot.”

Now, on no grounds would Yoongi would ever sing for just anyone, but Jimin isn’t just anyone, so he picks a favorite.

In the MD emoluments clause case, the president in his *individual* capacity is asking for a status conference. The judge previously rejected a motion to dismiss filed by Trump in his *official* capacity, but hasn't ruled on the individual capacity issue assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5396…
Why does this matter? Lawyers for Maryland and DC are gearing up to seek evidence from Trump (and as you'll see in the thread from last week, DOJ is getting ready to pursue an appeal). So Trump in his individual capacity wants his status resolved as things get more complicated

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

Okay then, I am in a hotel with two weeks worth of groceries for a family of four (really don't ask about my day) but there is wine and I've been putting this off so welcome to this evening's cultural activity! It is a reading of Amy Chua's book Political Tribes! There's wine!
I need a few minutes to breathe and start everything charging and figure out this food situation because ironically I have stuffed this mini fridge to capacity and also have nothing I could actually eat for dinner. There has to be pizza delivery to the motel near nothing right?
For those of you new to my feed, I often do things so you don't have to, and reading books that you should know exist but shouldn't spend time or money on is one of them.

Eventually I will prejudge a book wrongly and feel very chastened but I keep spinning that wheel!
