📖 10 Lessons I learned from the “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius

This was a life changing book for me—maybe it will change you!

Here are some lessons you can learn and implement in your life right now:

Read below 👇🏼
[1/10]

• “It’s silly to try to escape other people’s faults. They are inescapable. Just try to escape your own”

Marcus taught me to forget what other people are doing, saying & how much they criticize you

You have enough on your own plate, focus on being the best you can be.
When you find yourself judging others, stop and consider what faults you might have first

Let them be stubborn
Let them be rude

Don’t respond to their energy. Lead by example and let them see the correct way to live

Remember: the best revenge is to not be like them
[2/10]

•”Choose not to be harmed and you won’t feel harmed. Don’t feel harmed and you haven’t been.”

It’s not the event itself that disturbs you, but rather your interpretation of the event is what upsets you

Choose how you’ll respond to change how you feel
If someone were to say mean things to you and you take it personally and get upset, well that’s your CHOICE to feel that way

You can CHOOSE to not feel harmed by what they say and you won’t be

That simple
[3/10]

•”You could leave life right now, let that determine what you say and think.”

Marcus taught me to reflect on my mortality as a daily reminder that our time is running out.

Instead of wasting time on trivial nonsense, I will use it take me closer to my goals
Things that waste our time:

Social media
Video games
Toxic people
Endless TV
Constant partying

Remember: Time is your most valuable asset. Do not waste it!
[4/10]

•”That sort of person is bound to do that. You might as well resent a fig for secreting juice. You’ll both be dead soon enough- and forgotten.”

Does arguing with that friend or family member really matter?

You know how they are...selfish, childish, overreactive
That’s the point. You know how they are, so don’t get upset when their behaviors lines up with who they are

As Marcus says: are you a surprised when a fig secrets juice?

Will you be surprised when a rude person acts rude?

No, so accept them and teach them through your actions
[5/10]

“Our inward power—it pursues it’s own aims as circumstances allow; it turns obstacles into fuel. As a fire overwhelms what would have quenched a lamp. What’s thrown on top of the conflagration is absorbed, consumed by it-and makes it burn still higher.”
Marcus taught me to turn every single obstacle or experience of adversity into an opportunity that could work in my favor

Turning obstacles into fuel

You need to look for what the obstacle or adversity will teach you..

What can you learn from it? Can you display courage?
[6/10]

•”it’s unfortunate that this has happened —No, it’s fortunate that this has happened and I’ve remained unharmed by it—not shattered by the present or frightened of the future. It could’ve happened to anyone. But not everyone could have remained unharmed by it.”
Marcus taught me to be grateful for the power that lies within me

Perception-the ability to color our thoughts any way we do choose, which influences our mood

The beauty in this power occurs when we can paint a negative as a positive—and feel good about it
For having this power, we should be grateful for it
[7/10]

•”Some people , when they do someone a favor, are always looking for a chance to call it in—they regard it as debt. But others don’t do that. They’re like a vine that produces grapes without looking for anything in return. A dog when the hunt is over.”
Marcus taught me to give value selflessly and not worry about collecting on it

Just do it to do it

Help others to help them, that’s your gain, by being in good character you’re rewarded

Do good just for the sake of good, not for some monetary reward
[8/10]

•”Not to feel exasperated or defeated because your days aren’t packed with wise and moral actions. But to get back up when you fail, to celebrate behaving like a human—however imperfect it-and fully embrace the pursuit that you’ve embarked on.”
Marcus taught me to never give up, especially when times get hard or when I fail

We need to embrace our imperfections as humans, dust off our knees after falling and try again. That’s what makes us beautiful

It’s not about what you endure, but how you endure it that counts
[9/10]

•”Keep In mind how fast things pass by and are gone—those that are now, and those to come. Existence flows past us like a river. So it would take an idiot to feel self importance or distress, as if the things that irritate us lasted.”
Marcus taught me to widen my perspective with this visual exercise

Contemplate the vastness of time—how much has gone and how much is to come—how little our share of it

Does the coffee stain on your shirt really matter?

Does that girl denying you at the club really matter?
Don’t waste anymore time sweating or getting stressed out by the small stuff—shake it off, accept what happens and turn it into a positive
[10/10]

•”Not to assume its impossible because you find it hard. But to recognize that if it’s humanly possible, you can do it too.”

Marcus taught me to realize my dreams are obtainable, no matter how big they might be

If another man is doing it, I can too

Get after it
