As the government shutdown drags on, Federal workers who aren't getting paid are increasingly looking for work. And it looks like even workers at some funded agencies are starting to consider their future in government. 1/
We took a look at four unfunded agencies—the TSA, Department of Homeland Security, the IRS, and the Census Bureau. All four are seeing clicks on new jobs by their current employees elevated above where they usually are at this time of year.
TSA workers are clicking on jobs at an elevated rate:
So are workers at DHS:
And the IRS:
Census workers have also seen an acceleration in how much they are looking for jobs as the shutdown has gone on
We also took a look at funded agencies to see whether they're being affected. Workers at the Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, and the Department of Labor held on for awhile, but some seem to have started to see job search creeping up.
Education department workers seem to have started to see an acceleration:
As have SSA workers:
DOL search was largely in line with previous years, but in recent days it's become elevated over previous years. Too soon to tell if that's a real pick-up.
The Department of Defense is funded, but it has seen an increase in job search activity in recent months. It appears to have started around the time Mattis resigned...but it's unclear how much of the pick-up is due to the resignation and how much is affected by the shutdown
In conclusion, the analysis suggests that Federal worker frustration is starting to boil over even to workers not directly affected by the shutdown. /end
