Ppl may not know that I speak Italian and follow their politics. Italian politics is currently taking the strangest turn I've ever seen in regards to anti-refugee rhetoric, and I'd like to just inform y'all on it a bit. This turn is decolonization as anti-refugee politics
Luigi di Maio of the 5 Star Movement (party), one of the two deputy prime ministers of Italy, has flip flopped all over the place on immigration. Di Maio's party is currently in a coalition with the fascist party called Northern League, and so they're pretty anti-refugee rn.
Earlier this week, it appears that Di Maio's party is launching a new anti-refugee strategy. Di Maio was interviewed by reporters, and said, "Europe needs to have the strength to deal with the subject of decolonization in Africa."
He would continue to say that the Franc CFA (the money imposed by France on 14 African countries) has caused underdevelopment in the countries that use that currency and that that has caused people to leave their countries to Europe. *But he didn't stop there*
This man, one of the most powerful men in Italian politics, literally called for the European Union to put sanctions on France because of what Di Maio sees as the result of France's colonial control of parts of West Africa. The Italian ambassador in France was then called up...
and he got a talking to from the French government. And here I thought it was done, Di Maio was just talking outta his butt, it's all over. *But no.*

Today I see that Alessandro di Battista, a deputy who's part of the 5 Star Movement, went on a TV show last night...
and proceeded to say the same stuff about the Franc CFA and decolonization as Di Maio did. This might actually become the political line of the party, and it could become common within the Italian government if it spreads enough. This is the weirdest shit ever.
Now, just in case anyone thinks this is a good thing, it isn't. The only reason it's being said is because Italy hates refugees and they wanna find some way to stop it. They rhetoric in regards to decolonization is some paternalistic "Europe must decolonize Africa"
The reason I wanted to tell y'all about this is cause, well, this is the weirdest shit ever. I don't think I've ever seen a big party in a country do politics quite like this. Extremely, extremely strange
