My symposium on talking climate and soils with stakeholders in a changing world, to the @SSSA_soils international meeting earlier this month. The room was full - about 75 people, I'd guess. But since then, over 200 have watched the talk!

Finally, I just got back from a "live" trip where I collect a ton of invites for as many events as humanly possible to minimise the c footprint of each one: this week, 8 events in 3 days at @climateone @azusapacific @pepperdine + @westmontnews. So grateful for their flexibility!
It ain't easy, I'm not going to lie. The scheduling is very time-consuming. I had to set up a home studio. Being a more senior scientist, universities are more willing to flex with me than with more jr colleagues. And yes, I still do fly. Quite a bit.
My philosophy isn't about less per se, it's about being smarter with what we have. Resources, time ... and carbon. Use it all to maximum effectiveness to accomplish our purpose. Can I get an amen?

"oh no," he replied. "Fixing climate change is a doddle in the park compared to terraforming Mars."
My undergrad degree + first 5 papers are in astrophysics so I was already a huge fan of Lord Rees' work; but after that i now love him even more because he is exactly right and he said it SO perfectly.

My husband does a lot of video work so for the new year I asked him to help me invest in some quality lighting, sound-absorbing panels, and a professional backdrop from @BHPhotoVideo. The setup cost about $500 (so ~1 plane ticket) and I'll be using it multiple times each week!

When I receive a speaking invite, my first q is: could I do a low-carbon video talk? Thanks to peoples' willingness to give new-fangled tech a try, I now give about 3/4 of my talks this way! (thread, incl recommendations of platforms to use and avoid)
My new year started off with a bang when both @DianaWallSoil and @ASUgreen agreed to host inaugural virtual seminars. I am very grateful for their flexibility and excited to make these work!
In the course of these virtual events, I've tried nearly every commonly-used professional platform. (I have not used Twitch yet, but I won't rule that out since @climatefortnite uses it!)

@jennycohn1 @JoshData There’s heavy marketing behind corruptible electronic voting machine$. Much less money to be made from handmarked paper ballots, optical scanners and risk-limiting audits. We have to shift the equilibrium to counter marketing $. A unified trusted source of information would help.

Kicking off with land use: Our report says fundamental reform to how land is used and managed is needed to deliver the UK’s climate goals. There is now a unique opportunity to define a better land strategy that can tackle the challenges of #climatechange. Read the Exec Summary.
Significant changes in land use could help reduce emissions by 35-80% by 2050. Figure 2.5 explains. Deeper cuts in emissions by 2050 require ↑↑ tree planting & peatland restoration, while the harvesting of biomass could help to displace emissions in energy & construction.

Putting a price on carbon.

The IPCC report on holding global warming to 1.5°C released Sunday calls for it. A share of the Nobel in Economics was awarded to William Nordhaus this week for championing it. It's arguably the most efficient and powerful climate policy available.
So why do governments around the world keep falling short on carbon pricing, and how can break this logjam? I discussed these challenges with the @NYTimes @BradPlumer in an article appearing in yesterday's paper. nytimes.com/2018/10/08/cli…

1. In response to my @nytopinion piece with @jamesonmcb advocating a national clean energy standard, I got multiple questions on why it might be more likely to pass Congress than a carbon tax. Herewith, a theory:
2. Fossils are increasingly worried about climate lawsuits, so much they are spending money to gin up an Astroturfy campaign pushing Congress to exempt them from liability. They are willing to trade a low carbon price for relief, but getting few takers among Rs on Hill.
3. Suppose a big court decision goes against them. Juliana vs. U.S. case is most likely, judge has already written hugely favorable opinion toward kid-plaintiffs. Now fossils really worried. They put screws to their bought-off R and D politicians on Hill.
