When I receive a speaking invite, my first q is: could I do a low-carbon video talk? Thanks to peoples' willingness to give new-fangled tech a try, I now give about 3/4 of my talks this way! (thread, incl recommendations of platforms to use and avoid)
My new year started off with a bang when both @DianaWallSoil and @ASUgreen agreed to host inaugural virtual seminars. I am very grateful for their flexibility and excited to make these work!
In the course of these virtual events, I've tried nearly every commonly-used professional platform. (I have not used Twitch yet, but I won't rule that out since @climatefortnite uses it!)
For hi quality even with low internet signal, @AdobeConnect is the hands-down winner. It's a total pain to set up, but once it gets going, it's stellar.

For 80% just fine, 20% unfunctional, @zoom_us gets the raspberry. I've had more disasters with zoom than any other platform.
All the biz programs - @GoToMeeting @BlueJeansNet @webex - work fine most of the time but if you use them a lot, the fact that the first two make you constantly download the "latest" version is really annoying.

@Skype is generally reliable but has the most unreliable AV quality.
We used to use @GoogleHangout a lot for our group meetings, but their invitation system is buggy and screen sharing is limited, esp w ppt presentations.

There are a lot of smaller free programs and they usually seem to work okay. Does anyone have a fav I missed? Wd love to know.
This year, I’m investing in a better home studio setup: sound panels, good lighting, a professional backdrop, and a good mic. It feels like it costs a lot but it’s actually about the price of just a single ✈️ trip!
