We need to talk about applying for game dev jobs - I get a lot of CV and emails though about work and I am seeing the same mistakes again and again. Here are my super top 10 tips on what to do and what not to do when applying for jobs, especially entry level – #gamedev #gamejobs
1 – Introduce your self! - When you send an initial email, tell me who you are! What’s your name where do you come from WHATS YOUR SPECIALITY. I get many emails just asking if there are any ‘jobs’ going. If we are not advertising please tell me what you do!
2 – Put your best foot forward - “I am a writer/concept artist/animator” Are you really? Please think long and hard about this one. Chances are you excel in one area. I have yet to meet anyone who excels at more than one discipline that hasn't got 10/20+ years experience
3 – Check your self, before you wreck yourself – “I was lead writer” “I have shipped 10 games” Pro tip, lead means you lead a team, if you were the only one please don’t put lead! Did those ten games go through a full development cycle? From pre-production, though QA to bug fix?
Or were they free to download untested. This may be an unpopular one, but the experience gained from shipping a game through steam, IOS or console is vastly different. Hitting deadlines, working with other people, clients etc is invaluable.
We can spot these straight away with dates and experience not matching up, and it doesn't come across well! Feel free to link them though! We do want to see. Many pros work years in industry never shipping a single game.
4 - Keep it sweet and simple – Devs tends to lead busy lives we sadly don’t have the time to play your 10 hour game, watch your 10 min video or read your 50 page sample. Send us the best of the best and make it nice and easy to access. If we need more we will ask for it!
5 – Drop the ‘tude – Please be polite, courteous, and friendly. You’d think this one is obvious.
6 – Age before beauty – Listen to us jaded old fools, we often have sage advice! Please don’t get defensive if we say something that contradicts your degree/ideas we may actually know what we are talking about.
7 – But My Degree – You’ve spent 3 years with unity woo! Now be prepared to be told to completely relearn it to fit this particular game. I often say these degrees are like learning to drive. You have your licence, now it’s time to get on the road and learn how to really drive…
8 – Dress and Hygiene – Again I can’t believe I have to say this. Wear clean clothes, brush your teeth, wash your hair, dress smart, wear deodorant. It makes a difference.
9 – BE HONEST – ITS OK NOT TO KNOW THINGS. We don’t expect you to know everything, we certainly don’t. team work makes the dream work. We all rely on each other, and we TEACH each other. Its perfectly OK to say you don’t know what something is.
10 – ASK QUESTIONS – This, this is a big one. You want to know about us too, how do we work, what are our core hours? What do we think of crunch? Why do we make the games we make? How can we help you grow as a developer? Make a list and don’t be afraid to ask!
BONUS – Don’t take it personally – If we don’t get back to you, we may not have even seen your email. We get a lot, send reminders but don’t spam. Also you nay just not be a fit for that time or project. It could boil down to money, location or style. Keep positive.
Most importantly, lets keep making new and exciting games, together. Here ends my Ted Talk.
