Maybe? I am very much on board with the general point ($$!) but have a few additional thoughts. cc @nayafia esp.
@nayafia first, it is not clear to me that most projects know how to channel money. (some big ones certainly do! but I would be disappointed to see only the big projects succeed.) so simply giving money to people might not help.
@nayafia second, I have concerns about the umbrella foundations that currently exist in the FOSS space being able to manage community governance and cash flow at a significantly higher scale than currently.
@nayafia third, there is a question of commitment and sustainability and maintenance/encouragement of diversity in funded FOSS projects.
@nayafia a thought experiment: what if a foundation was created with a $100bn endowment, to do long term support of FOSS ecosystem. who runs that? why do we trust them? how do they decide what to fund? every answer I come up that doesn't rely on robust community governance... fails.
@nayafia some foundations are doing this really well! can they handle 10x or 100x or 1000x the $$? because that's what we're talking about here.
@nayafia these would be wonderful problems to have! but still problems. I would look to people like @chrismentzel and @epistemographer and @carlystrasser for thinking about how to run this kind of thing well at an administrative level. because they've done granting and sust for a living.
@nayafia @chrismentzel @epistemographer @carlystrasser ...thank you for listening to my depressing TED talk :). cc @WillingCarol @jacobian @holdenweb @tracykteal
