You know what baffles me most about the great replication crisis in social sciences & psychology?

The fact that anyone with an IQ higher than a sandwich would even think that the results of a study from 1974 would be replicated on a population from 2018 using the same methods.
Psychology and social sciences to physics, biology and chemistry are what little brothers and sisters are to older siblings when they copy their clothes and words and mannerisms trying to impress them so they’ll accept them into their big friendship group to be cool.
I don’t know why we are so scared to own our discipline and argue that replication is highly unlikely in many studies because humans do not exist in a vacuum and things change. Context, society, language, norms, beliefs, attitudes all change. That will change the findings!

Okay okay my fellow people who grew up in poverty or in very working class areas:

Name one thing you thought was ‘only for posh people’ when you were growing up that you now realise is for anyone.

I have TONNES!
The first one that springs to mind is Sainsbury’s. I was always told that Sainsbury’s was for rich and posh people and they went to do their shopping there and then had lunch in the cafe lmfao - I was about 20 before I set foot in one
Next one is Walkers Crisps. HAHAHAHA! God I woulda killed for walkers crisps at school. We had like the betterbuy ones from the supermarket and I remember always trying to hide them at lunch time and told everyone I had walkers but I had never had them.

This article is so important to me. I was raped 2 days after giving birth (at 17yo) which ripped open 47 stitches & caused very serious injuries.

This is much more common than we think

However, I wholly disagree that this issue of men raping women shortly after childbirth will be resolved by educating partners on why women can’t have sex after giving birth. All of these women were raped by men who couldn’t give a fuck about them. This isn’t lack of education.
We have a very serious misunderstanding of rape and sexual violence towards women if we believe that educating men would stop a rapist from holding a woman down after she’s given birth and taking what he feels entitled to

@mvthomster I don't know if I'd put it that way. But I'm guessing since this way of thinking and doing social science is alien to me.

Seems to go back to the work Marx (though he viewed himself as a scientist) and his influence on social sciences & humanities, from 1930s onward.
@mvthomster There are probably some terms and labels for this, and I am forgetting.

I once read live tweets from people attending the American Sociology Association annual conference. Most of the tweets, sessions, and papers had an "activist" or "advocacy" flavor.
@mvthomster There's a name for this belief system but I forgot.

Belief that social scientists are FIRST members of some interest group or identity, and SECOND scientists. Therefore they do social science IN SERVICE to their values and goals associated with their interest group or identity.

This whole paragraph (Gardner, 2011, p. xix) is a train wreck of scientific logic. Basically, Gardner says because he doesn't want to be a psychometrician, he doesn't have to gather data to multiple intelligences... and the theory isn't testable anyway.

So, I'm obviously glad that the Bannon invitation was rescinded. There were plenty of reasons to oppose it, but one thing I keep coming back to is how the arguments for these kinds of events seem to be premised on a pre-21st century model of discourse.
If there were only three TV channels with a couple of hours worth of news a day apiece and just a handful of widely read newspapers and opinion magazines, it's plausible that putting a public figure on a stage for an interview would yield something new and revealing.
But it's not 1968 anymore. We wring public figures dry. By the time someone's famous enough to be considered for something like this, they'll have been interviewed & analyzed a million times in a million different outlets. Bannon, specifically, ran a website embodying his views.

1) This is a thread on what has been confusing to me (at least): the tendency to rope literary studies into this collection of ‘postmodern’ disciplines allegedly making ‘social’ claims over and above scientific discovery. I’m looking for reading suggestions about what follows.
2) It’s becoming clear to me that when Rationalists (an identity category based on ideology, which denies its ideology as a basis of the identity) talk about the ‘postmodern humanities,’ etc., they mostly mean debates in anthropology & sociology over evolutionary psychology.
3) First, I acknowledge that there are humanistic approaches in sociology & anthro, though I wouldn’t consider either a branch of the humanities. Nor do I think literary studies research resembles research in those disciplines.

All different races of Mankind are derived from Manu and Shradha. The current Manu is Vaivasvata Manu.
2/ The word Manu literary means man but it is a title given to the progenitor of mankind. According to Hindu Puranas there are many kalpas (One day of Lord Brahma the creator) and each Kalpa has 14 manvantara and each manvatara has one manu. So basically each Kalpa has 14 Manus.
3/ The current manu of the present manvantara is Shraddhadeva or Vaivasvata Manu of this current Kalpa. He is the son of Vivasvat (Probably Surya) and is therefore also known as Manu-vaivasvata.
