The internet has expanded the surface area available for traditional social signaling (from @patrick_oshag's excellent podcast)
with more options available to demonstrate status, humans should continue to place higher & higher values on a shrinking basket of goods & services & experiences & relationships that stratify us against one another, giving those things defensible pricing power
The obvious themes supported by more available "status inventory" are luxury products, healthcare / well being, and travel. Non coincidentally, those are all secularly growing industries.
But increased status inventory also impacts other businesses in less obvious ways. Air pods = a status symbol, & that is a much better business than selling widgets. $20 cocktails & the high end spirits poured into them are tailor made to display status.
Millennials cant quite afford a house or the furniture to fill it up, but will pay for an overpriced brunch at Restoration Hardware and post a related selfie pic on Instagram.
