Any Bernstein initiated this wonderful project for Baltimore MD high school students to read the Odyssey. It was an honor to meet her and the students last year.
Small factual thing: there is nothing original in my choice not to use English dactylic hexameters: hardly anyone except Rodney Merrill has tried that. Most modern translations are prose (eg Rory) or free verse (eg Lattimore, Lombardi, Fagles). Mine is not.
Phone corrected Rieu to Rory.
I would not have taken on the Odyssey translation at all, if most current Anglophone readers had already been reading Homer in any kind of meter.

You can give just a few dollars, or just a few dollars a month. You can do it anonymously. I've had colleagues say the lack of means testing is a problem. But I've benefited from so many things that had nothing to do with means or worth (even beyond white privilege...).

I've been asked many times about my translation of the first epithet in the "Odyssey": polytropos (polytropon). I won't boringly repeat my thoughts on that. But I want to emphasize how very difficult, on some level impossible, all the epithets in Homer are.
How much repetition can a contemporary anglophone reader stand? What does repetition read like to us, vs sound like to an archaic audience? There's definitely a difference in what repetition conveys in different types of text & different cultural contexts. What then to do?
More specifically: the repeated elements in Homer have a dignity, the power of poetic folk memory. But it's often extremely difficult to translate them into English without making them sound just clunky or awkward or totally ridiculous.
