I've been thinking a lot about billionaires and how I believe they might be the solution to all our problems.
But it’s difficult to conceive of how much money a billion dollars is. So I’ve been doing the math to help me think about it.
My friend Rob gave me this easy way to conceive of how big a billion is: 1 million seconds is 11 and a half days, but 1 BILLION seconds is almost 32 YEARS.
Which, if you break that down into money goes like this - If you spent one dollar a second, you would be able to spend:
- $60 a minute
- $3,600 an hour
- $86,400 a day
- $604,800 a week
- $2,592,000 a month (during an average 30 day month)
- $31,536,000 a year
31 million dollars a year. For 31 years, 251 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes, 54.7843 seconds.
The top 3 billionaire Americans (Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett) have $286 Billion between them. So, they could spend a dollar a second for 9,152 YEARS.
I’ll repeat: they could spend $31 MILLION a YEAR for 9,152 YEARS before they ran out of money.
And they won’t live anywhere near that long: Bill is 63, Jeff is 55, and Warren is 88.
They have enough money to fix every single problem in our country - our crumbling education system, our skyrocketing homeless, our opioid epidemic, etc, etc. All while still living INSANELY LAVISH lifestyles.
There are 12 million children in America who go to bed hungry every day. This could be solved. Billionaires could solve this. Today. But they don’t.
I think it’s reasonable that we make them.
