$20m is a drop in the bucket and after dividing up it doesn't begin to cover the damage they caused. not even two weeks pay per head.
see, this is a problem with policing corporations. they deal in numbers most people can't really conceptualize very well. twenty million! wow! financial fucks deal in hundreds of millions without breaking a sweat
there is no victory here because that payout will not affect their future decisions; no "lesson" was learned. financial punishments towards businesses are not effective, we have decades of proof.
and the crux of the matter is this: the kind of crimes corporations commit are very difficult to actually accept. these people did a billion dollars of damage based on my very rough calculations.
64k employees, say they made minimum wage, say it takes them six months to get employed again. That's a half billion dollars that didn't get paid to workers. Add some higher wages based on region, longer delays looking for work, etc and a billion isn't hard to imagine
Now, they can't actually pay that. And that's the point - we shouldn't HAVE situations like this. It shouldn't BE possible to make a private decision that potentially causes a billion dollars of harm. That is Government-Level Money; it becomes a matter of public interest
But if you say to someone "there's a billion dollars of harm if they close their doors" they won't really understand what that means, that it means 64,000 humans potentially unable to pay for heat and water and food. The stakes are hard to comprehend.
And because the assumption in culture - thanks, 1000 years of conservative fucks - is that jobs are naturally occurring and effortless to obtain, it's impossible to convince most people that this isn't a fair burden to put on those workers
