Membership has declined by more than 10% since summer 2017 (575k) but the rate of loss of existing members has been accelerating.
NET membership has declined by around 6,000 in each of the past two months, from 524,000 at the start of December, to 512,000. theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
As suspected, the loss was not obvious immediately as members who simply did not renew are still counted as members for 6m after their renewal date has lapsed.

Other reports suggest that it is established members who have been drifting away and those dissolusioned with FB Brexit

Last week the High Court gave Barclays permission to move £191 BILLION assets from the U.K. to Ireland. To protect against no deal Brexit.

Currently reading "Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan" by William Dalrymple
In the acknowledgments of the book, Dr.Ashraf Ghani (then Finance Minister) is mentioned as an erudite historian. I did not know that, its a pleasant surprise.
In the acknowledgments, i have also noticed the name of Farrukh Husain who worked as a history researcher for William Dalraymple for this book. He has recently released a book on the same subject which i am planning to read soon.

Popping back in from my break to say: Chris Christie turning down a job with the Trump administration is THE news story this week that made me sit up and take notice.

More than Cohen's sentencing. More than any documents that have been pored over. More than anything.
It's not that those other events aren't consequential.

Well, except they might not be. If we've learned anything in the past two years, it's that nothing is automatic. Consequences don't happen if people don't impose them, and in Washington, most of that's like stage-fighting.
Like how when you practice judo, you rely on your partner to help you follow through with the move. Or in pro wrestling, you need your opponent to "sell" the hit. There are enforcement mechanisms but the higher up the echelons of power you get, the more they rely on cooperation.

According to the ONS, the #GenderPayGap has continued to fall this year and is now at a record low. Despite this, '#EqualPayDay 2018’ has remained at 10th November - the same date as each of the past two years. That’s the first clue there's something fishy here... (1/5)
This is because, instead of comparing median wages (the number in the middle), the Fawcett Society uses the mean (the average of all the data). This has the effect of giving more weight to the incomes of a relatively small number of high earners at the top of companies... (2/5).
That might be OK if you want to focus (say) on CEO salaries and the underrepresention of women on boards. But it is unrepresentative of the rest of the workforce, where the #GenderPayGap has already narrowed significantly, especially for women under 39 (3/5)

I thought it was a stress reaction, like some low-grade version of a panic attack. Not unreasonable given that (a) members of my family have had them over the years, and (b) I've been under a terrible amount of personal stress for a long while now.

Thread - I am 100% on board with calling out @chicagosymphony, @philorch et al. I would also agree with the analysis that the “pipeline” issue is a major contributor to the lack of diversity in orchestral programming.
What I’m concerned that people are missing is 1)That the pipeline begins WAY earlier than I have seen people acknowledge and 2) That we are unlikely to see the kind of systemic change that we need if we take a top-down approach. Both these issues lead us back to the same place.
If women and PoCs are going to even consider entering the pipeline, they need to know that there IS a pipeline well before it’s time for them to apply for conservatory.
