I think Labour in good position for 2022 Jim (objective view):
-economic pessimism rising
-widespread disillusionment with economy
-majority support for key "Corbynomics" planks
-nightmare incompetence backdrop for Cons
-most remainers will still fold Lab bc agree on other flanks
I don't have "dog in the race", I try to look at it as objectively as possible. People keep telling me at talks "yeah but Corbyn's leadership ratings are crap". Guys, EVERYBODY'S leadership ratings are crap. May, Gvt, May, everyone is in net negatives. I see Groupthink everywhere

When they reflected back on why, despite polling 50%, taking millions of votes, the SDP did not work, one major reason was simply our electoral system: "In all countries at all times, the first-past-the-post electoral system is a formidable obstacle to fundamental change"
They noted that with only one exception, since beginning of the 20th Century breakaway parties in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and US had usually not secured more than 10% of the vote while centrist third parties "never took or shared office or came close to doing so"

Academic Twitter - a thread - this is going to take a while, sorry
I've been holding back on saying a few things about Academic Twitter but I think that on balance it's now got to a point where a few things need to be said
The first thing to say is that compared to, say, five years ago, social media is a completely different space. There are far more academics sharing research, debating and collaborating -this is a very good thing

Thinking on #HolocaustMemorialDay about one particular story among millions that I read recently at Yad Vashem, and which I've thought about most days since
A wealthy man who feared for his family's safety had sold his house & used the money to buy a diamond and emerald necklace, which he could use either in the future or to trade for their safety. The necklace was hidden under some floor boards
He & his wife were sent to the camps. His wife was murdered. He somehow managed to survive. He was eventually released & years later went back. The necklace was still there. He couldn't bring himself to sell it. He later donated it to Yad Vashem, where it still sits #WeRemember

Much is made of the fiscal multiplier, the concept that spending by government, or reductions in taxes (ideally of those who will spend that extra money rather than hoard it) will multiply spending, incomes and investment in the economy. 1/5
What is less discussed is that the opposite is also true. If you reduce spending or excessively tax those that would have spent that income, you create a negative multiplier effect where each £ of reduced gov spending results in lower spending, incomes and investment. 2/5
If we take the NHS as an example, estimates for the fiscal multiplier lie between 2.5 and 6.1 depending on where the money is spent. In other words, every £1 spent by gov on the NHS creates between £2.50 and £6.10 worth of economic activity, the expenditure has multiplied. 3/5

We asked you which party you thought had the oldest average age of MPs.

Most of you, 66%, thought it was the @Conservatives, then the @LibDems (15%), then @UKLabour (14%), with the @theSNP coming in last with (5%).

I bet the SNP are feeling fairly youthful right about now.
