Some more detail on the Tusk-May meeting in Brussels has emerged after EU-27 ambassadors met this morning.

May told Tusk she couldn't get her party behind the Corbyn letter and that there 30 MPs who would never back her deal without EU movement on the backstop.

May told Tusk and Juncker that the Brady amendment was her mandate. Tusk said, "we are not putting a time limit on peace

May said she was not asking for an extension of Article 50.

Tusk accused May of running down the clock and putting extreme pressure on people and the process. By people he meant the ordinary people who would suffer the consequences of no deal. He then suggested that Corbyn letter might be a way forward.

May told him "my party can't support the Corbyn letter" and said she would never get the party behind her to do so.

Y'day EU sources said May made no response

She told Tusk that there were 30 MPs who would not back the deal, which is why she needed movement from the EU.

May did not ask for a council or summit. Even if she did Tusk has said there will be no summit until he has clarity on what solution has support in the House of Commons.

On Sharm El Shiekh meeting being a chance to talk Brexit - it is unclear at this stage which leaders will be there. No concrete plans at this stage.

EU-27 ambassadors did not mention the Hell comments by Tusk in their meeting. "In general, says source, they would have chosen different words but the message would be the same."

May spoke with Juncker about alternative arrangements but not what that meant. So she is sending Barclay to discuss that with Barnier on Monday. This is with a view to reconvene at end of the month for "stock taking".
