X : Was mapping used in HS2?
Me : Yes, by @GoAgileGov (the former CIO) e.g. in creating the virtual world service for planning its construction. The net effect was that service was delivered under budget and ahead of schedule.
X : How about the rest of HS2?
Me : No idea.
X : Could mapping be used beyond IT?
Me : Of course. In the case of HS2 I don't believe it spread beyond it.
X : Is it still used today?
Me : I don't know the answer to that. I do know there has been a change of executive and that can often mean a change in practice.
X : What's the largest impact of mapping on a project?
Me : The impact varies because it depends upon what is there and what you decide to do once you have a map. The single largest effect I know of is around an estimated £1.5bn saved in the lifetime of a project.

Regarding maps and teams. I can use a map to examine capital flow [A], create a P&L [B], set a direction [C] and determine what a team delivers, consumes and the metrics it needs (e.g. cost) [D] ... I can share this in a way that every team knows how they fit into the picture.
... of course, it lacks a lot of the details but that's deliberate. With a team, you need to find the best way of achieving something which means maximising the conditions for that team to succeed. Leave the details to them, just provide support and an intent.
In military history, that combination of maps, commander's intent, basic principles (doctrine), training and learning are a powerful set of forces. Sadly it often seems lacking in many businesses.

Me : No. Regulation should be used to prevent market failure and not protect the incompetent.
X : Are you saying Amazon is incompetent?
Me : No. Their competitors are.
X : How?
Me : Gosh. First a couple of things to know. Cloud was highly anticipatable before Amazon launched EC2 in 2006, many of us were building in this space beforehand. Yes, companies have inertia but this was a known change.
X : And?
Me : Amazon was at the bottom of the hill in 2006, up against huge competitors who had all the resources, contacts, finances and well ... everything. Amazon outplayed them all. Now Amazon is at the top of the hill with all the resources, contacts, finances etc.
X : So?

Let's start with use case no. 1:
You're dev team (in a scrappy startup, or big boy enterprise) and you've got a few devs but need to host your code/service somewhere, and you want to use k8s (assuming GKE/EKS/AKS being used and not rolling your own)

Pros:
+ Step up from current/recent deployment methods out there in the industry
+ GKE/EKS/AKS aren't horrendous!
+ Cost reductions are possible compared to many previous solutions

2019 Wish : The #serverless community practices what it preaches, and focuses the conferences/talks/articles on the value gained, rather than the technology and concepts. In fact, we probably need to have some basic rules for serverless content. For example -
1) Must identify yourself as a practitioner (someone leveraging #serverless technologies to build something of end customer value) or a provider (someone who is providing technology that elables a practitioner to go serverless).
2) Practitioner content must highlight the agility/elasticity/cost gains from using the serverless tech, and the business value tied to solution.Bonus points for minimal code written:: value ratio.

#serverless advocates - we are doing something wrong. I have been putting this off for a long time but I really think it is important and has to be said. Warning: LONG thread.
The trigger for this thread was a talk I gave at #DevOpsDays Edinburgh. It wasn't the talk per-say, but the whole conference experience (which was awesome, but that's a topic for another thread).
Here I am, with around 200 people who really care about the DevOps culture and practices - and so little of them has any experience with serverless tech.

2) A quick background: Peter Paul Strzok II (FBI) has a father named Peter Paul Strzok who was born in 1933. We know he was in the Army Corp of Engineers - Catholic Relief Services - President of a non profit (AFRGO) and has worked all over the world. See Thread 1 for more 🔝
3) In 1991 - Just before getting a contract with USAID for Disaster Relief in Iraq --- Peter Strzok (the father) started a company based in "Minnesota" called "MINAFCO, INC." VERY LITTLE INFO ON THIS COMPANY. I believe changed address to WI in 2002.
