Time to remind everyone again that @UofCalifornia had no tuition until voters passed Prop. 13 and cut property taxes. (Yes, a previous generation chose to indebt you so they could have overvalued houses.)
I’ll just put the @sfchronicle newspaper clipping from 1978 here. @jerrybrowngov told us so!

One reason that Bay Area cities resort to approving large amounts of [tech] office space is in part because single-family homeowners do not pay property tax levels that keep pace with the cost of providing services. So local govts have to look toward alternate strategies.
Take a look at San Jose's sale of land to Google exactly one month ago: mercurynews.com/2018/12/04/san…
Why did they do this? Well, actually, San Jose has a housing surplus (!) compared to neighboring Santa Clara County cities. Shouldn't that be exciting? sanjose.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&…

In Japan, train companies can earn revenue from rents in surrounding station areas on top of fares. In CA, we can invest billions in infrastructure and subsequent spikes in nearby land/property values are captured almost wholly by the people who happen to own nearby property.

I love that @jack did a 10-day Vipassana retreat and also his product and company are literally the most antithetical experience in the entire world to everything that Vipassana retreats stand for.
Like, if he redesigned Twitter the product from the perspective of a Vipassana retreat, every time I’d have an urge to tweet, the app would put Goenka on speakerphone to say “START AGAIN!!!” and then it would ask me to notice and observe all sensations until they dissipated away.
And then maybe 10 days and only two meals a day and 6 hours of sleep every single night for 10 nights later, maybe I could say something.

Had a little moment just now where I remembered how much I loved the Hobby Show in Toronto.

Picture ComicCon. Now add model trains and remote controlled boats. AND comics. AND prop vendors — to this day I regret not buying an Aliens pulse rifle cast from the original prop.
I did model trains with my dad at least in part to go to the Hobby Show every year. And I integrated whatever I found there into our model trains, much to the chagrin of the Erin Mills Model Railroad Association.
See, it was the kind of train club where everybody builds a section of track and then at a show you can connect them all together and have a massive model rail line.

My four foot section was particularly great.

Creator David Chase had the intellectual courage to show his viewers how ugly their favorite characters could be. He tested our loyalty to guys who were killers, bigots & thugs who prostituted and abused women (remember Sil punching a dancer? Ralph beating her to death?). (2)
It seemed clear that Chase was uneasy with the audience's bloodlust, and the way fans spoke as though they were part of the family. There are some major tells. (3)

#BREAKING: @NewYorkStateAG Underwood just filed suit against Exxon for defrauding investors regarding the financial risk posed to the company by climate change regs. An extensive investigation found an alleged fraudulent scheme that reached the highest levels of the company.

Seems like a good time to remind everyone that multiple courts rejected Exxon's attempts to block @NewYorkStateAG's investigation as "political." A federal judge called Exxon's efforts "legal jiu jitsu," "implausible," "a wild stretch of logic," and a "huge waste" of time and $.

A thread on the Texas primary. Good news. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Texas, our nemesis has been Speaker Joe Strauss. Although GOP, he killed many conservative bills.
Strauss decided to retire, possibly because he had a bullseye on his back. Conservatives were VERY angry with Strauss’ constant tabling of conservative bills. He never allowed to be brought up for a vote. They either died in committee or in the Calendars Committee.
So, with Strauss gone, Texas conservatives had new hope. But Strauss’s allies, all incumbents, were running for election. Well, Texas conservatives took out no less than TWELVE of Strauss’s incumbent RINO buddies. TWELVE! With runoffs it could be even higher.
