I am wrestling with various metrical & rhythmical challenges. Is Atreid a spondee? Are there 4 syllables in the possessive Atreus'? Would you ever naturally elide "the", as in "th' Achaeans"? I think I know the answers, but I wish it were otherwise.
Mostly I agree with @amjuster: it’s about the ear, not rules. If it doesn’t sound right, or the rhythm feels forced, then it doesn’t spark joy and you have to kiss it goodbye. I tweeted this in sorrowful recognition of that. . Names are the toughest bc there are no synonyms.
Depressing realization of the morning: there is no way to wrestle "son of Aegeus" or "Aegeus's son" into an iambic line. It wd be a whole lot easier if I were doing a Pope-style translation, in which I allowed myself creative circumlocutions: "Son of the famous King of Attica".
