Some predictions of possible consequences of the Strasbourg Big Brother Watch judgment for the Investigatory Powers Act. #IPAct 1/6
1. Oversight of entire bulk interception selection process from start (bearer selection) through middle (selectors etc) to end (analyst searches etc).

Public description of nature and granularity of oversight at each stage. Perhaps doable within current #IPAct framework. 2/6
2. Selection of related communications data (secondary data in #IPAct terms) for purposes other than ascertaining whether someone is currently within the British Islands.

#IPAct amendment. May sound technical, but this is potentially a significant issue. 3/6

1/20 The EU Council Freedom of Expression Guidelines stress the importance of “protecting intermediaries from the obligation of blocking Internet content without prior due process.”
2/20 ‘Tackling Illegal Content Online’ institutionalises the opposite: prior restraint instead of prior due process. Small wonder they deleted a previously leaked draft’s reference to the Guidelines.

Let’s talk about Russia, because I think there’s a real cultural difference in how we in the West understand surveillance and what’s actually happening with Russian efforts so we have a hard time believing the depth of what’s going on.
My parents are diplomats and they were posted to Russia. Before they left they deleted all social media and told my sister and I that the Russians would be watching us. My mum does property management stuff and my dad does tech and communications stuff.
It sounds fancy, but basically my dad is the guy that you call when your printer isn’t working, and he does things like make sure firewalls are up and people are trained on new software. Mum figures out who’s gonna live where and gets them their furniture. Not high ranking stuff.

The replace-libraries-with-Amazon thing is such a fascinating microcosm of the wretchedness of our current take culture.
First some hapless, unheard-of practitioner of the dismal science has, as is his discipline's wont, a very rational and logical epiphany about the market inefficiency of an institution whose very purpose is to provide a service outside the market.
In times of yore the take would have been read by a few other academics, or perhaps raised some eyebrows in a regional paper, and in either case been promptly forgotten.

Happy to oblige! The biggest reason that a few frameworks dominate the landscape is probably straightforward inertia. Most devs (those of use who chat about this stuff on Twitter are NOT representative) don't want to investigate and learn alternatives; they have better things 1/
to do, and engineering PMs aren't picking the 'best' technology, they're picking the safe one that means they'll be able to hire some poor sap to maintain everything a couple of years down the line. Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM. These dynamics favour incumbents. 2/
So does the cacophony of options. Why do tech meetups always serve pepperoni pizza, even though almost no-one would actually *choose* it given alternatives? Because it's something that very few people will object to. It gets the job done — it's 'good enough'. 3/
