Ever heard of Jonathan Weisman? He's a senior editor for the New York Times, the 'paper of record', who thinks that #GamerGate started in 2011 and that Brianna Wu is a credible source of information.

At this point, if you're still using boomer news sources for information about anything even vaguely related to online culture, you deserve everything you get.
Even the Wikipedia intersectional fan-fiction version of events at least gets the dates right.
Here's something worth chewing on; if a person who is considered to be among the top journalists in not the world - just by the nature of his position if nothing else - can be so far off with easily-verifiable details, why should we trust what the media says about *anything*?
I've been musing for a while now on the question of whether the media is actually worse now than it's ever been, or whether we're just more able to fact-check it in ways we couldn't previously, suggesting that it's always been this bad, but we just didn't quite realise it.
For the record, my current working theory is that it's both: the media *is* definitely worse now than I've ever known it, but it probably always was a lot worse than I thought it was in the first place.
