This is extraordinary, on a basic psychological level. Just say: "I'm sorry, I got that bit wrong." Just say it. How insecure do you have to be to so desperately avoid it?
And sweet lord, the evasion. First saying he'd been promised it wouldn't be raised. Then pulling the old sorry-for-causing-offence line. I mean, give me a fucking break. And even then refusing to explicitly accept it is factually wrong.
And then claiming it is due to Twitter's character limit. Monstrous buffoon. Honestly it is one of the shame-faced performances I have seen in some time, and that's saying something.
