It might seem like reasonless chaos, but there is a moral message to what is happening here. You cannot govern on the basis of gibberish. Y
You cannot make gurgled yearnings the basis for your negotiating posture. Because the lack of meaning in those original propositions means that they do not work as functional foundations of policy.
If anything good can come from this abysmal spectacle, it is that MPs give up on fairy-tales and support concrete, deliverable mechanisms for what to do next.

David Anderson makes an absolutely killer point. If he went to fight for Isis, this could not happen. But because Shamima Begum has Bangladeshi parents, it has. This creates two classes of Brits.
She was born in the UK. She has never held another passport. She has foreign parents. I am in exactly the same category. And so, for that matter is Sajid Javid.
I suppose he gives not a fuck, on the basis that the only incentive behind his judgements, from this to the refugee 'crisis' nonsense, is his own professional ambition.

Terribly sad to hear that Paul Flynn has died. The man was a hero. He was relentless and highly principled on cannabis reform.
At a recent cannabis demo outside parliament, a bunch of weed-laced edibles were laid out on a table with Flynn beside them as he published a private member's bill on the issue.
The only reason the 82-year-old did not eat one, he said, was because "I've got to make a speech at 2pm". He was kind and diligent and radical and funny. Big loss.

Almost brought tears to my eyes seeing the kids protest in Parliament Square early. Such an obvious, unalloyed good to have young people invested in politics and demand change.
Therefore completely unsurprising to log onto Twitter and find a bunch of stale middle aged bores slagging them off.
The sight of young people demanding a better world will always cause outrage in adults too unimaginative, foolish and sel-interested to demand it themselves.

The disastrous headlines for the Prime Minister this morning are the product of 2 years in which hard truths have been shrouded in meaningless rhetoric, & actively hidden. Those hard truths are being exposed now - as they always would have been. #Brexit. /1
Corbyn has failed to get close to those hard truths, failed to grasp the reality of the stark choices ahead and so failed to provide leadership both for the Labour Remainers and for Labour Leavers. Burying one’s head in the Brexit sand doesn’t make the problem go away. /2
When Corbyn says “Not really, no”, he should say which specific part of Jo Johnson’s detailed analysis he disagrees with and why. Where exactly does he think Johnson has got it wrong? Or does he agree with his analysis & say let’s do it anyway? /3

Brexit seems to be the solution to all our economic woes (short thread)

E.g., Hannan thinks that Brexit will be great because house prices will crash by 1/3. That will be great for first-time buyers, right?
Problem is last time house prices crashed (2008) home ownership in younger people did not increase. It decreased by quite a bit as can be seen in this graph. 2/
That's because housing prices are connected to lots of other things in the economy, such as job prospects, lending criteria. It's not that people in 2008 were like "Hey look, all those houses around us have become cheaper. Now we can finally buy!" 3/

Services: 80% of UK economy (architecture, management consulting, legal, creative etc) & big services surplus UK runs with RoW & EU. So why does Govt want to damage economy in #Brexit plan being discussed by cabinet today (focusing on goods only?) ft.com/content/2ce78f… via @FT
And anyway services get bundled in today's global value chains for high-value high-tech goods (c. Aircraft engines & their maintenance) which is what UK government is supposed to be promoting via its (mysterious) industrial policy announced back in 2016.
If you wanted a better trade & industrial policy for UK (which is desirable to create high-paying jobs via higher productivity) you wouldn't put it together in the way that #Brexit is taking us (raising barriers to trading with UK's big EU markets).

It's fair to say that there is only a small (though significant) movement towards "remain" & against #Brexit, leading some to say that a #PeoplesVote might lead to the same result
But let's look at where we are

2) the press is still largely pro #Brexit. The BBC has, in the name of balance, been at best hopeless in holding brexiters to account for previous statements and more importantly, both major parties are still pretending their Brexit will be OK
There's no major voice against it
3) and yet, despite the lack of any major voice exposing the reality of #Brexit, the message is still getting through about what a screw up Brexit really is.

There's consistent polls showing a majority who think Brexit is going badly, and a lack of faith in government handling
