NEW THIS AM: Washington Post is out with our latest Mueller poll. Lots of interesting findings inside, but I’ll tweet a few that I found notable washingtonpost.com/world/national…
A lot more people trust Mueller’s version of the facts than Trump’s (56 to 33 percent). And Mueller hasn’t engendered the skeptical reaction that Kenneth Starr did as conclusion of investigation seems to near. washingtonpost.com/world/national…
In 1998, 61 percent of Americans said Starr was mainly interested in hurting Clinton; 35 percent said he was mainly interesting in finding the truth. Mueller has the opposite: 57 percent say he’s interested in finding the truth; 36 percent say he’s interested in hurting Trump.
In the, “it’s all politics” category:
*Just over 4 in 10 believe Mueller has proved members of Trump’s presidential campaign lied about contacts with Russians
*More than 7 in 10 Republicans say he has not.
People have pleaded guilty to this...
Similarly in the “it’s all politics” category:
34 percent believe Mueller has *proved* Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia to help the Republican win.
55 percent of Democrats believe this.
Mueller hasn’t even alleged it...
washingtonpost.com/world/national…
There is one thing that people agree on: releasing Mueller’s findings. Strong majorities of Democrats and Republicans say Mueller’s report should be made public in its entirety, with 81 percent overall supporting its release. washingtonpost.com/world/national…
Will they be disappointed? Likely incoming AG Bill Barr won’t commit to releasing report, and he notes (accurately) the regulations don’t specifically call for that. Will Congress intervene? There is bi-partisan legislation to make Mueller findings public. washingtonpost.com/world/national…
Overall, Mueller still enjoys 51 percent approval (compared to 35 percent who approve, & 52 percent who disapprove, Trump’s response). But breakdown is very partisan. Will be interesting to see how public views Mueller in hindsight, esp. if report is a letdown or never released
Finally, if you’re interested in polls like these, follow our polling gurus @sfcpoll and @EmGusk. They do revelatory work like this on a daily basis, on Mueller and other newsy topics. And a hat tip to @ScharSchool, which did this poll with us. washingtonpost.com/world/national…
