It's ironic that Australia has no Bill of Rights, but criminal defendants are probably afforded more protections and receive fairer treatment there than they do in the US, where the rights guaranteed criminal defendants under the Constitution are considered sacrosanct.
Not that the Australian criminal justice system is any sort of model - Aboriginal Australians are vastly over-represented. They are some 30% of the jail/prison population, yet make up under 5% of the population.
And the juvenile justice system is horrific. 63% of young people incarcerated in Australia are Aboriginal.
So I am really not saying the Australian system is any sort of utopia - I am just saying it is better than the US system (not hard) and that that is ironic given that there are no constitutional protections for criminal defendants here.
Also, note, Australia's immigration policies are WORSE than the US's - hard to believe, but true. So Australia wins no prizes for humanitarian country of the year or anything.
I guess I am more making a point about how meaningless constitutional protections can be.
