In the world of orchestral musicians the ratio is probably 100 to 1. Yet conservatories continue to churn out thousands of graduates every year, every one of them brainwashed into thinking their talent and brilliance will win the day. It's institutional sabotage.
In the world of digital reporting, the ratio is 1 to 100. The problem those 100 jobs are focused quantity not quality and cannot sustain an individual career. There are legions of reporters working for outlets without institutional memory. Every 5 years, we reinvent the wheel.
In digital, average comp for freelance these days is about $300 per article. A little less, a little more depending. No one can sustain the volume at that rate that's necessary to maintaining a decent quality of life. It's just not possible.
