This is exactly what conservatives are saying: That crimes alleged by nonwhite, nonstraight individuals should be assumed false by default, unless they can provide evidence otherwise.

The right broadly dismisses real violence toward blacks and gays. The litany of black men killed by white violence and then blamed for their own murders feels endless. Michael Brown. Eric Garner. Walter Scott. Philando Castile. Trayvon Martin. 12-year-old Tamar Rice!
The list of LGBTQs murdered and blamed for their own deaths is equally long: Rebecca Wight and Claudia Brenner, Petty Officer Allan Schindler, Brandon Teena, Scott Amedure, Matthew Shepard, the victims at Pulse.
Add to that the fact that even mass crimes against mostly white victims are politicized by the far right and called fiction—think of all of the shootings that have been called hoaxes and the work of “crisis actors”!
If Smollett committed a hoax, it’s horrific act.
