The problem with announcing that you are done with or leaving evangelicalism is the same problem as announcing you are an evangelical: it’s never entirely clear what exactly you are leaving.
Evangelicalism is not an institution or denomination. Are you just not going to go to certain conferences? Are you just not going to read or share certain sites? Are you just unfollowing certain Christians? Are you joining a new church? Are you leaving the faith?
It sounds impressive but practically it could mean that nothing in your faith changes. Or it could just mean that you no longer want to associate or be identified with certain other Christians. Who knows!
This isn’t necessarily a critique of people who in good conscience are compelled to change beliefs or associations, etc (unless they are abandoning orthodox—then it is a critique). It’s just an observation about the usefulness of the phrase “leaving evangelicalism.”
To be exceedingly clear, I was not subtweeting @KyleJamesHoward here. I did not see this tweet. Besides, in this video he defines what he means, which is what I’m talking about.
