One problem with thinking primarily in terms of conscious, articulated beliefs is that you can say, "I have *never* heard anyone teach that in church!" to dismiss criticisms of the way churches have taught certain ideas.
A proper human anthropology acknowledges that groups "teach" in a multitude of ways. Some teach explicitly, some implicitly. Some teach through silence. Some teach by not correcting the cultural norms. Some teach through lifted eyebrows.
We can have productive debates about what this implicit teachings are. I may claim that my childhood churches taught "x" implicitly and you may find my evidence unpersuasive.

But what we can't do without assuming a false human anthropology is deny existence of implicit teaching
