Black people in Canada were often not given full names, but were rather referred to by "N*****r ________" (their first name). Many landmarks were names after them, using these racist terms, and many of them are still official names to this day. #nerdnite #yeg

At one point, doctors were actually given a bonus for every black person they refused. This was part of a desire to rid Alberta of "black spots." #nerdnite #yeg

Until at least 1924, swimming pools were segregated. #nerdnite #yeg

Ever wonder what this whitewashed sign on the side of the Gibson block used to be? It used to be a sign for the Gibson Cafe, which boasted "white help only."

Edmonton also has a huge history of support of the KKK. They were certified as a society until 2003, which was only taken away because they stopped filing financial documents in 2001. #nerdnite #yeg
