OK, kids. Gather round, for I have acquired another #Comicsgate gem, Mike S. Miller’s LONESTAR. Much like I did for #IronShites last November, this will be a thread more or less live-tweeting my reactions as I read it. #LoadStar (1/34)
I’m actually a fan of Injustice, the comic Miller got himself fired from for being a raging homophobe, and thought his work on it was good, so this might not be quite as terrible as #IronShites was. The question is can he write? (Spoiler: No, he can’t) #LoadStar (2/34)
P. 1. LoneStar sitting on a rooftop, looking down and whispering “no.” The difference is that Alan Moore meant for us to find Rorschach repulsive. I suspect Miller does not feel that way about his “hero,” who’s delivering a Fox News monologue about entitlement. #LoadStar (3/34)
P. 2. Check it out. Spider-Man has Spider-Sense, and Miller’s racist hero has what? Racist-Sense? Mexican-Sense? He never uses this power again, by the way. #LoadStar (4/34)
P. 3. My god, the racism, it burns. What happened, Miller, did a Latinx guy run off with your girlfriend? This is just awful. #LoadStar (5/34)
P. 3 (cont’d). You see, the man mentions Carlos and Diablo, and we know which ones they are because they’re both wearing tattoos of their own names. Diablo’s is on his face. Yawn. #LoadStar (6/34)
P. 4. A montage of LoneStar beating the fuck out of some Mexicans. There’s no coherent storytelling here, but Miller’s audience isn’t interested in that, they’re just interested in good old racist violence, like in the apolitical comics of their childhood. #LoadStar (7/34)
P. 5. Earlier this guy called LoneStar "jefe,” now he’s calling him “ese.” This is all the Spanish Mike Miller knows. He got a Spanish-to-English dictionary and found all the cliches. #LoadStar (8/34)
P. 6. LoneStar, who the title says has the “heart of a hero,” breaks this guy’s arms in two places. Charming. #LoadStar (9/34)
P. 7. LoneStar tells the damsel in distress, “listen, if you’re going to be out this late at night, do yourself a favor—get a gun, missy.” But #Comicsgate just wants apolitical comics. #LoadStar (10/34)
P. 8. Are these guys all wearing t-shirts with their superhero emblems on them? #LoadStar (11/34)
P. 10. A little Nighthawks at the Diner reference. Clever. Original. Not at all a cliche for this to be the only piece of classical art he knows, since he’s a “manly man” like all the guys in #Comicsgate pretend to be. #LoadStar (12/34)
P. 10 (cont’d). The love interest’s name is Angel. Seriously. Eyeroll. #LoadStar (13/34)
P. 12. You see, in Miller’s world, homeless people aren’t actually hungry, and heroes carry around grocery store gift cards to passive-aggressively shame them for pretending to be. Fuck you, Miller. That’s just awful. #LoadStar (14/34)
P. 13. Even the Latinx “hero” is crude, violent, and has such a hot temper that he needs to be handled and kept calm by the others. #LoadStar (15/34)
P. 14. I just realized that the Native American hero is called “Scout.” Man, Miller, you’re just trying to hit every racist stereotype and/or cliche you can think of, huh? #LoadStar (16/34)
P. 15. Miller just spent half a page of real estate having the Pastor character lead the rest of the team in prayer before going on an op. Because Miller doesn’t want you to forget that he is Christian, and so are all of his “heroes.” Two things about this. (17/34)
1st, again, I thought #Comicsgate was supposed to be apolitical, but all of a sudden you’re rubbing this mawkish caricature of piety in the reader’s faces? 2nd, don’t these same people get mad whenever superheroes in comics have conversations about their lives? #LoadStar (18/34)
P. 17. Okay. So the bad guys are bloodsucking vampires who are breeding on American soil. We get it, Miller. Jesus. #LoadStar (19/34)
P. 23. Why does this feel like the end of an issue, when we’re only halfway through the story? What is happening here? Why should I care about one-eyed lumberjack daddy-bear? (20/34)
Honestly, this would be a pretty good cliffhanger. If it was at the end of the comic. But Miller doesn’t actually understand how cliffhangers work. #LoadStar (21/34)
P. 34. This is the second time the white hero has beaten up his Latinx teammate for being a dick. In case you were wondering. #LoadStar (22/34)
P. 36. Is this the only outfit Bobby/LoneStar has? #LoadStar (23/34)
P. 36 (cont’d). It’s “you’re.” This book was edited by Roland Mann. If Roland Mann was a woman with a milkshake, Miller and his pals would be looking for his head on a stick for a your/you’re error. #LoadStar (24/34)
P. 36 (cont’d). Wait, what does Angel do for a living? When we met her, she was working in the Edward Hopper diner. But her friend says Bob might be “some fanboy who’s seen [her] on TV”? Is she a star? And also a waitress? Does Miller even know? #LoadStar (25/34)
P. 38. Oh I see. She’s an actor. But she’s not an actor of note, she’s a regular actor who does commercials. Who might have a fanboy. Even though she still has to go on callbacks for rental car commercials. #LoadStar (26/34)
P. 38 (cont’d). This is spurious logic at best for her to deduce his line of work. This is a step away from “Sea…C for Catwoman!” Except this isn’t kidding. #LoadStar (27/34)
P. 41. I’m gonna be honest. This is so bad that I don’t even know how to roast it. As a #Comicsgate hero likes to say, “nobody actually talks this way.” So unbelievably heavy-handed. #LoadStar (28/34)
P. 44. Miller wants to have his cake and eat it too, making the attempted rape (second one in this book, by the way) titillating by giving us an upskirt shot just before the hero saves Angel on the next page. Oh, and OF COURSE it’s the bum from earlier. #LoadStar (29/34)
P. 47. “But I need you…” GAG #LoadStar (30/34)
P. 48. I have questions. First: Who is that tied up man? Why is he tied up? I thought the Communist Vampire brainwashed everyone and they were all working together. So who is this person and why is he tied up? (31/34)
Second: Why do they need to go to the dark web to buy guns? Can’t they all just by them legally, all these people who we’ve established have money and clean records? Third, why does the comic just…end? #LoadStar (32/34)
Also, after this piece of crap, which is more explicit in its politics than any of the stuff #Comicsgate likes to complain about, I don’t want to hear anyone pretending that all they want is apolitical comics. #LoadStar (33/34)
Overall, Miller’s a better artist than Ibito Canales by miles, so it was less painful to claw my way through. On the other hand, he’s also a worse writer than Dickie Meyer, so that evens it out. Overall, I give it one-and-a-half “Stahps.” #LoadStar (34/34)
