[Thread on #Algerie] 1/ Many of you will have read my last thread on two hashtags. One of the hashtags, #الجزاير_تنتخب (Algeria votes), is trending today with around 11.6k tweets. I have done an analysis this morning to see if there has been any change and yes, there has....
2/ The hashtag has been argued by some as a malicious tactic to divide opposition by encouraging people to vote in the elite-led elections in December. In the last thread I found a large proportion of accounts (12%) on both hashtags were created September 2019, with 8%
3/ being created in the space of just two days - 22nd and 23rd September. In today's analysis I looked at 5,244 unique accounts. In this sample, which include a number of the accounts mentioned previously, the number of suspicious accounts has increased again...

[#Thread on #Algeria] 1/ @Redasbox got in touch to ask if I could have a look at some unusual tweeting in Algeria. I analysed around 20,000 tweets from around 5,769 unique accounts. What I found, was alarming, and clear evidence of a disinformation campaign. Read on #Algerie
@Redasbox 2/ First some very brief context. Algeria has seen the 32nd weekend of pro-democracy demonstrations. Peaceful protests successfully pressured Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the ruler of 20 years, to step down in April. An election has been called for on December 12th to help try and
3/ resolve the political stalemate in Algeria. However, many Algerians are not happy as they believe the elections will be rigged by a military/elite junta. This is not uncommon in MENA. Thus the elections are seen as giving democratic legitimacy to continued authoritarian rule

Amid the ongoing conflict in NW #Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (#HTS) continues to evolve in intriguing ways - into a more politically mature & intelligent jihadist movement.

It's current leadership clearly seeks to position itself somewhere between #MuslimBrotherhood & #AlQaeda.
There's now little question that #HTS no longer represents #AlQaeda.

It's clearly still an extremist movement, but signs continue to add up indicating that it's developing into something qualitatively different than the Jabhat al-Nusra of 2014-15 - a "Shami #Taliban," perhaps.
Most recently in the public space, #HTS issued a statement acknowledging its willingness to abide by an externally-negotiated (by #Turkey, #Iran & #Russia) ceasefire.

That was a first.

Its never happened before in #Syria & it's not a move any #AlQaeda affiliate would ever take.

Big news from the latest @UN report on #ISIS/#alQaida was ISIS' rebuild strategy and that much of it is being directed by Abu Bakr al-#Baghdadi out of Iraq

But there are a number of other interesting observations in the report...
On #alQaida, the @UN intelligence suggests the group although the health of AQ leader Ayman al-Zawahiri & AQ's succession plan "are in doubt"
The @UN report also concludes #alQaida-aligned groups "are stronger than their #ISIL [#ISIS] counterparts in #Idlib, #Syria|n Arab Republic, #Yemen, #Somalia and much of West #Africa"

With the powerful mass movement for democracy & accountability in #Algeria/#Algerie reaching a turning point in next 2 days, 7 diverse Algerian personalities launched this video appeal for unity & real dialog: (Thread) tsa-algerie.com/lappel-de-pers…
Of note (& sad), that the good news site TSA that carried this has been banned in #Algeria. But it is on FB & other platforms so it should get wide distribution? It's issued in the name of "Agreement for the sake of protecting the homeland"
The seven people who signed the Agreement are standing together and take turns reading short sections of it. This one just says: "Appeal to the Algerian people"

REALITY: Jews have faced racism and discrimination for centuries in Arab countries.

Can't believe my eyes seeing de Tocqueville quoted re: prospects of democratic transition in #Algeria. The guy literally wrote memos in support of French brutal torture system in #Algeria. It's already a violence that he became the democracy theorist in the US but this is a farce
On #epistemic violences and theorizing from the #GlobalSouth, think about how Alexis de Tocqueville, before becoming the father figure of democracy in the U.S. was a war-strategist for colonial #France in #Algeria. I'll throw in a few bonus quotes from his "Essay on #Algeria":
#Tocqueville wrote in 1841 "The most effective means we can use to subjugate the tribes is the interdiction of commerce” - speaking here about #Algerians around the Ottoman Empire's fall and the invasion of #France.

Every time I catch myself thinking "This is the most Algeria thing to ever happen," something... even more Algeria manages to happen and prove me wrong.

Like this dude.
Okay, so this clip definitely needs some translation and historical context for non-Algeria people (including other Arabs and non-Arabs, too).
He's basically saying:

“We are Algerian, not Syrian. We're not going to do anything destructive like burn down the whole country. We're not Syrians. Our youth are better than yours. Come back here in a year. You'll see; we'll never be Syria. We're Algeria. Long live Algeria!"

These Moroccan coins feature the so-called Seal of Solomon, often depicted as a hexagram, similar to the Star of David. The coins are dated respectively 1271 A.H. (1855) and 1290 A.H. (1873/4), minted by king 'Abd al-Raḥmān and his successor, Muḥammad IV of #Morocco.
The Seal of Solomon is the signet ring attributed to the Abrahamic king/prophet Solomon. It is said that Solomon used this ring to control the spirits and animals. The design as a hexagram is often depicted on medieval #Islamic banners, coins, drinking-cups or in mosques.
According to the Catalan Atlas (1375), the two Anatolian beyliks of respectively Karaman and Candar featured a Seal of Solomon on their flags. The symbol was popular among the Turkish beyliks, and was later used by the #Ottomans in their mosque decorations.
