It’s been nearly 12 hours since Senator John Cornyn posted a tweet in which he quotes the deceased Italian dictator and mass murderer, Benito Mussolini without any context. @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
Senator Cornyn has so far refused to provide an explanation that comes close to resembling the words, “total clarity.” @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
Mussolini was responsible for the murder of nearly 450,000 people during his totalitarian reign. This includes the murders of over 30,000 Ethiopians murdered during Italy’s invasion. @JohnCornyn @nrsc @SenatePress
Mussolini used anti-liberal and anti-left paramilitaries, Brownshirts and Blackshirts, to fight what the Washington Post called “‘pinkos’ in the streets or attack union or labor party meetings.” @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
Mussolini’s destruction of democracy through violence (might makes right) makes Cornyn’s tweets even more disturbing — particularly in light of totalitarian and anti-democratic violence in the United States by alt-right and white nationalists. @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
Cornyn’s tweet suggests his disdain of recently elected members of Congress who align themselves as democratic socialists. It is completely irresponsible to use this Mussolini quote in an era where elected officials have become targets of violence. @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
The use of a quote by a violence prone dictator, who brought fascism into Europe should bring a strong swift and public rebuke from Republican leadership. It’s time for all of us to contact our U.S. Senators. Tell them this is not okay. @JohnCornyn @NRSC @SenatePress
You may phone the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the Senate office you request.
