As we learn more about this morning’s attack on a Jewish Synagogue in Pittsburg, many are wondering what they can do. Here are some thoughts. Post yours as well. You can’t wait for leaders to tell you what to do. You have to publicly act and organize your friends to do the same.
1. Buy chalk and chalk #IAmGeorgeSoros on a sidewalk or draw it on paper; take a photo and post it on Facebook. Soros has become an euphemism for “Jew” and irresponsible political attacks on him have made it unsafe for the Jewish community;
2. Talk to three friends. Tell them what happened. Remind them this isn’t an attack on the Jewish community, its an attack on democracy. Explain why and use this video for help;

Okay Twitter, I have a lot of thoughts on Israel, antisemitism, and the U.S. right. Better thinkers than I have are writing about this but as a Jewish woman raised in the Evangelical church I have some thoughts I’d like to share. 1/?
First — critiquing Israel is not anti-semitic. In fact, my critiques of Israel are deeply rooted in my own understanding of Judaism and Jewishness which I cannot separate from my understanding of and work towards a shared liberation. 2/?
Also - such unbalanced and superficial understandings of antisemitism obscure real antisemitic sentiment in the U.S. and divorce antisemitism from larger ideologies of white supremacy. 3/?

#AntiSemitism emerges strongly when a civilization is in decline. It's like clockwork. This is not new—we've been seeing it for 2,000 years. We each need to ask ourselves how we may have contributed to our own self-destruction, and make the radical choice to love our neighbor.
The reason for this emergence is that when a culture is in decline, from fear, citizens refuse to look at their own contribution, and therefore must externally displace blame. Seeing it in almost every tweet about this evil shooting. Germany didn't get there in a vacuum; nor we.
Every case of Jew-hatred we see, from Charlottesville to Pittsburgh, is a symptom of our crumbling demise. It knows no political party; this hatred is systemic and murderous and we don't fight it with more rage. We fight it with love—getting in each other's lives in radical love.

Okay then, I am in a hotel with two weeks worth of groceries for a family of four (really don't ask about my day) but there is wine and I've been putting this off so welcome to this evening's cultural activity! It is a reading of Amy Chua's book Political Tribes! There's wine!
I need a few minutes to breathe and start everything charging and figure out this food situation because ironically I have stuffed this mini fridge to capacity and also have nothing I could actually eat for dinner. There has to be pizza delivery to the motel near nothing right?
For those of you new to my feed, I often do things so you don't have to, and reading books that you should know exist but shouldn't spend time or money on is one of them.

Eventually I will prejudge a book wrongly and feel very chastened but I keep spinning that wheel!
