So Keith Jarrett heads Cloud Financial Management at @awscloud, and I've gotta say--I'm good, but I've got nothing on this guy.
We hung out at re:Invent at a vendor event and got to talking about various ways to think about cloud economics.
We get engrossed in a conversation, and share a cab back to the hotels afterwards. He gets out first, and my cab continues on, when it hits me:
HE STIFFED ME FOR THE $11 CAB FARE! And that's the single greatest metaphor for AWS billing that I've ever seen.
- An annoying cost, but not enough to complain about.
- I didn't know the charge was coming until I'd already incurred it.
- And if I'd used a rideshare service I could have prepaid for the ride and saved money.
Keith Jarrett: get on his level!
(He's in fact a super nice guy and the only reason I hesitated this long to post it was that there's effectively zero chance that he hears this story and doesn't feel awful. Rest assured, I'll get more than $11 in mileage from this story.)
