It was quite literally founded on the genocide of indigenous people and the chattel slavery and forced bondage of one fifth of its population, with a Constitution that denied black people citizenship based on their race, following a bloody Revolutionary War. WHAT.
In all seriousness, this is why we learn so little about the histories of Native people and of slavery -- because these stories reveal the lie we tell ourselves about American exceptionalism and destroy our entire mythology about ourselves.
This is just weird.
