Do you use SBI to give peeps feedback? If not, you should.

SBI stands for "Situation, Behavior, Impact" and it is the best tool I've found for giving people constructive feedback.
S: <describe the situation>

When did this happen? Who was there? Where did it happen? The more precise you can be, the better.
B: <describe the observed behavior>

Describe what you observed. Focus on the behavior, not the topic or idea. Don't use SBI to provide feedback on ideas.
I: <explain the impact>

How did this behavior impact you (personally).

How did this behavior impact other people?

How did this behavior impact the organization or project?
Providing SBI disarms. It reduces the likelihood the recipient will react defensively because it focuses on behaviors. Most people understand, pretty deeply, that they are not perfect and they have behaviors they can change.
SBI feedback is easy to provide. The format lends itself to, quick, in-the-moment, feedback. It can be verbal or written. This increases the frequency feedback is given and received.
SBI feedback can (and should) be used to re-enforce great behaviors and to help change disruptive behaviors.
SBI feedback, in written form, provides a great paper-trail for dealing with longstanding performance issues. Because SBI feedback so easy to give, and receive, it gets used a lot. If behaviors don't change, managers can use it to help employees understand "enough is enough".
SBI feedback in written form also can be used to justify promotions and advancements. Collect a bunch of it, and writing that promo justification just got a lot easier.
SBI feedback is contagious. Once a one leader in an org starts using it (up, down, and across) others pick it up and use it. This is because it is such a simple tool and because it works.
FWIW, this thread on SBI feedback is directly related to this one, started by @haacked, on abolishing annual reviews.

Go ahead and give SBI a try. A little practice makes perfect.
