The media needs its own version of AOC to draw a contrast between what Americans *should* be getting from their press and what they *are* getting from all the mediocre writers who think they're geniuses like Bret Stephens and Chris Cillizza
Still thinking about this truly awful, bootlicking life philosophy @BretStephensNYT adheres to. "Don't rock the boat or you might not get an award!"

Story: Around the time I was leaving HUD, I got asked to interview for a job with a $250K/year salary. More than I'd ever made.
Turned out the job would entail working for someone who'd been on George W. Bush's national security team. So I declined. Didn't have to think about it. I don't even shake hands with those people. Their money is no good to me.
The point is, it's perfectly ok to make enemies, as well as to make decisions based on your values, regardless of how it will impact your prospects for professional advancement.

This is pretty typical, so I'm gonna break down some math here as to why pulling the trigger should be the absolute last resort in a bad situation.
Here's what happens:

1. You hit what you were aiming at, and *only* what you were aiming at, and it was the right person

2. You hit what you were aiming at, and *only* what you were aiming at, but it was the *wrong* person
3. You hit what you were aiming at and it was the right person, but you *also* hit a bystander

4. You hit what you were aiming at and it was the *wrong* person *and* you hit a bystander

This won't impact much because there have been fewer than 60K post-9/11 Purple Hearts among 22 million vets. But it sends a terrible message: That combat injuries are more worthy than training injuries--when, in fact, dangerous, realistic training is *why* we're effective in war.
It's also obviously unfair to veterans who were poisoned stateside by their own government.
I don't know who crafted this new policy, and I could certainly be wrong, but it sounds like something civilians who've never been around the military *think* the military would like.

Russia realized it couldn't win a kinetic war with the West and NATO. So it switched to information operations and financial operations. They're simply buying off Western leaders and organizations. This is what 21st century warfare looks like and they're absolutely owning us.
China and Saudi Arabia do this as well. And we'll see them do it more.
Geopolitical experts and historians may correct me, but I feel like in the past, adversaries bought off spies. They paid turncoats for information. Now it's different. Now they pay you to simply stay in your position and advocate for general policies that work in their favor.

Scammers are buying proliferating on the #KindleUnlimited platform which hurts all authors whether they use @AmazonKDP or not, whether you're traditionally published, with a small press or go the indie route.
These people are literally SELLING & RESELLING manuscripts & copyright only to repackage, recover & release as a brand new book under another author's name (with a shiny, new fake copyright, too). This is deceptive as hell. @AmazonKDP @Amazonhelp has been notified to no avail.

1. McCain's funeral was very moving and appropriately political (as befits the funeral of a major political figure). But it also reflected the weakness of a certain type of politics, Decency Resistance or Ancien Régime Resistance.
2. To say the funeral was political is not to insult it -- I'd argue the funeral of any major political figure is inescapably political, an occasion for staking out a legacy and laying claim to a heritage. McCain himself designed it that way.
3. The overriding message of the funeral was to contrast, by barely disguised subtweets, McCain's decency & patriotism with Trump's squalor, selfishness & bigotry.

They're your boots, your backpack, and your bottle of water. They aid you on your journey, but you're still the one who has to do the walking.

Many #writers wander into the craft with an idealistic mindset. I know I did. I thought it would be easy.

But think about it. If it were quick and easy, what would be the point?
