I mean, specific details aside, if Van Jones was trying to get conservatives at CPAC to embrace criminal justice reform, saying “you’re kicking liberals’ butts” is... not the worst political move, right?

I don’t know if he was being that tactical, but....
That said, worth noting that almost all low-incarceration states are Blue, and almost all high-incarceration are Red:
And when it comes to absolute changes in prison populations, Blue CA leads the way, many big decliners are Blue, and most that have seen increase since 2010 are Red.
But still, if you want to bring the Red states along, there are worse things to do than appeal to their anti-Liberal vanity at CPAC.

Just your annual reminder that the US News rankings are based on a wholly arbitrary and completely indefensible faux-quantification based on an arbitrary weighting system that changes annually just to make the rankings move to sell annual access.

It’s a scam. And a toxic one.
And I tweeted that out before I looked up the results, so I would have said that no matter what happened w Fordham (which went “down” two spots, which… all noise—and would have been all noise if we went up two spots too).

Noise. Just all toxic noise.
Someone once pointed out that if an alum donated $1,000,000 and the school held a party and set the cash on fire on the quad, its ranking would go up, because spending-per-student just rose (bc USNWR doesn’t care what it is spent ON).

Like I said, stupid and toxic. And popular.

1. Realignment was a sprawling, complex bill that did a lot, but the part I’m focusing on was closing a giant fiscal moral hazard problem between county prosecutors and state prisons.
2. Prosecutors are county officials, and the county pays (mostly) their budgets. Jails and probation, where ppl go for lower-level misdemeanors, are also county-funded institutions.

Prisons, where ppl go for (more-serious) felonies, are state agencies.

That’s a problem.
3. Being harsher is actually CHEAPER for a county DA because it pushes the costs off the county and onto the state. Leniency is politically riskier AND more expensive.

So of course DAs over-avail themselves of “free” prison beds, and states have few to no ways to stop them.

CA death row moratorium is going to get 20,000 more column inches of attention than Realignment.

Realignment was a fundament change in how we balance criminal justice powers, led to the largest one-year decline in prison pops anywhere, and could be adopted widely.

ALSO:
Prior to Realignment, CA's conditions of ("normal") confinement were KILLING 60 PPL PER YEAR.

The state admitted in Plata that inadequate medical care due to overcrowding led to ~60 preventable deaths per year.

Realignment IS A CAPITAL ISSUE. But abt our "hidden" death penalty.
We execute far FAR more ppl every year thru unsafe conditions, shoddy medical care, inadequate drug treatment, etc., etc., etc. Even if we don't kill the person in prison, prison exposure shortens life expectancy.

So the total person-years destroyed by prison DWARFS death row.

I need to gather my thoughts, but let me start by saying that if the @BillKristol types would stop hyperventilating for 30 seconds, they’d realize their precious GOP establishment is still very much in tact.

That was evident at #CPAC.
First: It’s painfully evident what the GOPe’s strategy is.

The entirety of #CPAC was repackaging establishment conservatism under Trump’s “America First” brand.

I have arrived at CPAC. Today’s first session features Rep. Jim Jordan, Rep. Mark Meadows and Matt Schlapp. They are saying that there is no collusion. The session is called Marketing Marxism: There’s Nothing New About the Green New Deal.
Matt Schlapp says that people say Trump is dishonest, but what’s more honest than going in front of a huge rally with lots of cameras and telling people what he really thinks about tough issues?

Criminal justice reform is necessary. While many are concentrated on how it benefits blacks and shores up Democrat base, the current system is actually harder on working class Whites in many ways. Failure to act now will ensure Democrat policy and political costs later...
Stepping an fetchiting now, during a #LameCuck session prior to the Democrat majority, instead of ramming through the Wall and other priorities is showing weakness and betrays the base, just when you need us most.
Trump and the GOP can't even stop the theft of a dozen or so seats, stolen by Democrat fraud. They seem incapable of draining the swamp and restoring rule of law. Acting on this now is tone deaf and thirsty Boomerism.

Criminal justice reform victories thread for the 2018 election:
Coloradans overwhelmingly voted to enact Amendment A, removing prison slave labor from their state constitution. States are the laboratories of democracy and this could be a big step toward eventually removing similar language from the U.S. Constitution’s 13th Amendment.
Louisianans voted to approve Amendment 2, requiring a unanimous jury verdict before any felony conviction. Louisiana used to allow for felony convictions resulting in life sentences even if only 10 out of 12 jurors supported a guilty verdict. This Jim Crow-relic of a law is done.

My client walked out of Rikers Island today after a jury acquitted him of all charges. He waited in jail for his trial for 3 years. He lost his job and missed his son’s first 3 birthdays simply because he couldn’t afford bail. He’s not unique - THIS IS OUR SYSTEM. #reform
