2/ Within a few decades we could have autonomous robotic industry in space using lunar & asteroid resources. It will be able to build **for free** a sun-orbiting space telescope capable of seeing cars parked in the driveways of suburban homes on a planet 100 light years away...
3/ So you can bet if there ARE any alien civilizations just decades more advanced than us located within 100 light years of our sun, then they've already done it, and they'll be looking at Earth and all the other interesting planets they can see right about now.
4/ But they won't see Earth as it is right now, but as it was 100 years ago (if they are watching from 100 light years away). They would see us inventing aiplanes and electrifying our cities, and they'll be guessing how far along we've come in the 100 years they can't see yet.
5/ We could be watching them, too (if they exist), as soon as we get our butts in gear and put industry in space.
