Ram Guha's recent article is bad, don't read it, and if you've read it don't bother quote tweeting it to critique it

One point though, the fellow doesn't know what basic terms mean. Will just comment on the last bit where he asks communists to become 'democratic socialists'
Thing is, these are two different socialist lines with different praxis, and one cannot opportunistically become the other. That is not how politics work. I have no problems with actual democratic socialists (by which it is generally meant electoral democratic socialists)
He probably has no idea what communism means, or how difficult it is internally to reconcile even two similar lines. Let alone wholesale abandon them. Can be done, but the way he cavalierly writes that without caveats it is probable he doesn't know what he is talking about

1. Start with something simple. This video is a good description of jargon used in the left sphere, so you know what these words are

2. A very concise (and in parts incorrect) video summary of Marx's political theory from a non-Marxist, i.e. liberal-capitalist, perspective, still very useful for beginners before you start with the actual reading

There are those in the Indian progressive constellation who characterise the first war of Independence reductively as a feudal/Brahminical project.

They are wrong. As Marx correctly observed, the Mutiny was not reactionary though parts of it was. It was revolutionary.

Mangal Pandey's propaganda of the deed today, on 29 March 1857 and the actual start of the rebellion in Meerut in May has a gap of a month and more. Volumes can be written about what happened in that gap.

Was the first mutiny itself based on anxieties which had religeous/caste basis? In parts. But in parts it was based on the widespread material oppression by the colonial machinery. It wasn't a merely plot of disgruntled soldiers but a spontaneous uprising

Legit theory for #StarWars #EpisodeIX #TheRiseOfSkywalker. This is going to be a substantial thread so bear with me here. But after reading some of JJ Abram's comments, I think it's clear what the "twist" is and what the title means.

Rey is Darth Vader's daughter.
I think this makes sense, because even though there was no "plan" for the sequel trilogy, it seems clear that JJ Abrams had a solid concept for what he wanted the character of Rey to be, and he's laid a TON of clues in #TheForceAwakens as to what that concept is.
First, the theory that Rey is Luke's daughter or Leia's daughter doesn't make much sense. There's no way Leia would not know she had a child out there somewhere, and Luke wouldn't abandon his own kid. Them being unaware of Rey until TFA just isn't feasible or believable.

I have cited AO3's taxonomy and archiving systems as models at academic linguistics conferences because they are IMPRESSIVE as usable, durable, well-designed systems, and frankly academia could stand to learn from fandom here
Here's an example: rights transfer and orphaning

Academic archives are patchy when the original depositor of the data dies or doesn't want to be responsible for it anymore. AO3 has a whole system in place to transfer fic to another user or leave it up without your name attached
I was literally at a conference a few years ago when an academic was like "oh yeah we just don't know how to deal with rights transfer at our archive" and I pulled up AO3's orphaning policy as a model
