Here's the full text of the government's letter to Barnier on a ring-fenced treaty on the rights of @the3million and @BritishInEurope post-Brexit (h/t @adamfleming) 1/3
2/3 As others have said, the letter should be copied in to the Council and European Council, since they would need to change the Commission's negotiating mandate and maybe the guidelines. However, the Commission can ask the Council to amend its negotiating mandate.

Full status of Brexit roll over FTA talks in the link. In addition to Japan and Turkey, Algeria is "unlikely" to be ready by Brexit day, and most others seem uncertain ("engagement ongoing")
Claims that all these treaties would be negotiated on time - and the wider claims of David Davis - have turned out to be untrue. Now certain that a no deal Brexit will, at least initially, reduce UK trade not only with the EU *but also non-EU countries*.
Hey, "trade with the Commonwealth" folks!

As it stands, a no deal Brexit could interrupt free trade agreements with Cameroon, the Caribbean, Canada, Ghana and other African countries including South Africa. Not to mention Cyprus and Malta, obviously.

1/ Member States' powers to remove nationality are limited by EU law, but not extinguished. The one relevant judgment to date says that Member States can withdraw nationality due to deception, being in the 'public interest': curia.europa.eu/juris/document…
2/ The implication is that other public interest grounds might be possible. The CJEU also said that removal had to be proportionate and subject to judicial review. A second judgment on this issue is due on March 12th: curia.europa.eu/juris/liste.js…
3/ Finally, it's useful to observe that the UK Supreme Court in Pham, while not deciding the EU law point, was quite critical of the way the CJEU had brought deprivation of nationality within the scope of EU law: supremecourt.uk/cases/docs/uks… //

2/ Page 1. The Home Secretary admits that law enforcement alternatives in the event of no deal Brexit are "less efficient" and need more staff, ie cost more. UK has to change law. So might Member States. In six weeks?
3/ Page 2. Home Secretary: Please use Interpol instead of the Schengen Information System. There's no fall back in place for passenger name record exchange used for anti-terrorist checks.

A not-so-short thread which I hope simplifies a seemingly never-ending process but one which could have an abrupt end in less than 40 days. /1
Some context first: The key problem is the backstop - the Irish Protocol to us its proper name

It’s a section of the Withdrawal Agreement (WA) - a 585-page legal text which, together with a shorter Political Declaration (PD), forms the divorce treaty between UK & the EU. /2
The two texts - the WA & the PD - were the consequence of nearly two years of negotiations.

They were finalised + agreed by both the UK government (@10DowningStreet) and the EU (@EU_Commission) late last year. /3

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
And now that I'm not desperately trying to keep up with livetweeting it, I shall turn my mess of self-retweets into a proper thread. #Brexit #BrexitDK
acknowledges #Brexit will have challenges; emphasises no naïveté regarding "land of milk and honey". Refreshing sense of pragmatism; we'll see how #DExEU and DK reps present it.

3. Despite your cheerful tone, many of us don’t feel our rights are secure, as @cliodiaspora rightly puts it. And we still have to apply to secure them, meaning we can be rejected (with scarily high % of errors at the Home Office, as you know).
