Democrats begged the Republican-controlled Congress to not let the Violence Against Women Act expire.

Begged Paul Ryan. Begged Mitch McConnell.

They chose to let expire an act passed in 1994 vital to protecting women from violence.

This wasn’t “Congress”. It was Republicans.
One of the provisions of the VAWA allowed to expire despite having been passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in 2004 was the Debbie Smith Act.

It is the primary vehicle for:

1) funding federal support for the testing of rape kits
2) reducing backlogs of untested kits
