1/7) On the floor of the House of Representatives on February 13, 2020, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "This [the ERA] has nothing to do with the abortion issue." This week arrived yet another proof that Pelosi's statement was utterly false.

2/7) On 10-13-21, Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers filed a brief at the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, in a lawsuit seeking to invalidate the state law that limits Medicaid funding of abortion to cases of life of the mother, rape, and incest.
3/7) In the new brief, Planned Parenthood and its allied attorneys at the Women's Law Project argue that the state law violates the Pennsylvania ERA, adopted in 1971 (when Pennsylvania law prohibited abortion, except to save the life of the mother).

The text of the Equal Rights Amendment states "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." That's all we're asking for. #ERAnow

Anti-Equal Rights Amendment activists argue it would require women to register for the draft.

But, did you know— currently— nothing prevents women from being drafted??

Women were nearly drafted in the last days of WWII as nurses.

In 2016 the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would have required women to register for Selective Service, w support from Senator John McCain, who explained that women already serve with great distinction in all aspects of our armed forces.

This is the #DemPartyPlatform for 2020. This part is called: Protecting Women’s Rights
Only one party has a specific plan to ensure the rights of women, over half our population, is codified in law. This plan includes finally passing the #ERA 1/8 #ERANow
#Democrats will fight to guarantee equal rights for women, including by ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment and at long last enshrining gender equality in the U.S. Constitution. 2/8 #DemPartyPlatform #ERA #ERANOW
#Democrats will take aggressive action to end pay inequality, including by increasing penalties against companies that discriminate against women and passing the Paycheck Fairness Act. 3/8 #DemPartyPlatform #EqualPay

on #WomensEqualityDay, I'd like to remind you all the ways Trump has failed women and made life more dangerous for us and how Biden will be a champion for us.

A THREAD
Trump has tried to rip away health care benefits & protections for millions of women. In
the middle of a pandemic, Trump is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down Obamacare,
which would allow insurers to deny women coverage because of pregnancy or pre-existing
conditions.
Trump rolled back protections from discrimination/harassment in the workplace. He revoked the Obama-Biden Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces executive order,
which required that federal contractors comply w/ labor, wage an hour, family & medical
leave, safety & health, and civil rights

I’m on a women’s agenda briefing call with the @JoeBiden team and WOW, wow, wow!

I will update this thread when I have a chance with some specific points but I’m very happy with how ambitious the Biden Women’s Platform is.

Ladies, this is your reminder to register to vote. 🦋
.@JoeBiden's Agenda for women is broken into five categories: 1. Improve economic security. He'll start by fighting for equal pay, investing in women-owned small businesses, expand access to education/training, and strengthening pay and benefits in careers filled by women.
2. Expand access to health care and tackle health inequities. Biden will expand access to high-quality, affordable health care, including reproductive health care. and repeal the Hyde Amendment. #WomenforBiden #TeamJoe

Alyssa and others are so blinded by their belief that women are treated ‘less-than’ in modern-day America that they aren’t seeing things clearly.

In 2020, the ERA would only be a symbolic gesture for women. It is actually boys & men who would benefit.

A thread:
How would the ERA help women in 2020?

The gender pay gap? That’s due to women’s personal choices, and if there IS discrimination, there are laws already in place for that.

Sexual harassment? No... it wouldn’t help there, either.

The housework gender gap? You’re kidding, right?
But for men...

Research shows that men receive 63% longer sentences than women do for committing the same crime, and women are twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.

If the ERA comes about, I hope we can address this inequality.

Today @RepFredUpton turned his back on every single woman in Michigan and across the country. Upton's vote against allowing the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to move forward is completely inexcusable and downright shameful. #MI06 #ERANow politico.com/news/2020/02/1…

A Utah Rep. sent these arguments to a constituent abt why he DOES NOT support the ERA.

Let's dismantle them.

"Thank you for reaching out. I absolutely support the protection of women's rights. My biggest concern w the ERA is the unintended impact it can have on women, such as:"
"Women may no longer receive special accommodations in the workplace."

Women do NOT receive special accommodations in the workplace just because they’re women. If anything it's the opposite.

If we have medical needs, we are treated as others with medical needs are treated.
"Stay-at-home mothers may not receive social security benefits based on their spouse's income."

Social security has been gender inclusive for surviving spouses since a legal challenge in 1975. This is an outdated concern from the early 1970s.

The most common "argument" I see against the Equal Rights Amendment is some version of:

"What rights are you denied?" / "What rights do men have that women don't?"

The opposition to #ERANow has gotten more sophisticated since all of their culture-war arguments are now moot.

🧵
They used to use scare-tactics abt women being dragged out of their homes to serve in the military, or talk abt the Boogeyman of gay marriage— but, women now serve at the military at all levels & gay marriage ✔️

So...

All they have left is to try & convince us we DON'T NEED IT.
But, if the #ERA would add absolutely no new constitutional protections & would essentially just be symbolic— why would they oppose something they think is truly toothless/ useless?

*whispers: they don't actually think that, they know it has power*

Last Friday I spoke a GOTV rally in Stafford, Virginia hosted by @QasimRashid, @jessfosterva and Joshua Cole for Delegate. Hearing Sen @timkaine, Gold Star father Khizr Khan, former MI gubernatorial candidate Dr. @AbdulElSayed, and many others speak, a common theme emerged:
Democrats lead with compassion. That’s where our policies start. That is our compass. In my remarks to the crowd, I told a story I had never publicly told before.

Last October, I was sitting in court with my client, a large, burly man from El Salvador.
He had a bright, cheery-eyed daughter, no more than 7. We'd just finished our asylum trial. I looked over to him, and saw him tear up. He turned to me quizzically.

I figured he would ask about his appeal rights, or some procedural question. But I’ll never forget what he said.

Good evening! I will begin live-tweeting the #DemDebate2020 at 9PM ET for @CourthouseNews but in the meantime, let's go over some policy points for each of tonight's contenders.

But first, we'll revisit rules quickly: recall, candidates have 60 seconds to respond, 30 seconds for follow-ups. There will be no opening remarks to save time but closing remarks will be delivered by each.

My comments on today’s @housejudiciary historic #eraHearing.

#ERANow
I don’t have equal rights under the Constitution. But today, with brave members of Congress and with the blood, passion and decades of hard work of women and allies behind them, the House of Representatives took an important step to change that.
It is time for the Constitution to reflect the powerful principles of its first three words:
“We the people.”
Not “We the Men”
We. The. People.
