Today we celebrate the International Women's Day. Women from the continent are hardly given the respect and honour they deserve. We will celebrate women across the continent and what they've done and how they have influenced the world around them.

1. Egyptian author & feminist @monaeltahawy is a booming voice on the continent. Her declaration of faith is "Fuck the Patriarchy." She started conversations around sexual harassment in mosques and her new book The Seven Necessary Sins For Women and Girls will be out this year.
2. For more than 10 years @Doyin_Ogunye has been at the helm of keeping the beaches of Lagos clean. She's rescued sea turtles that were about to be sold & killed & she's created a space for Nigerian children to participate in cleaning the beaches of Lagos.

Today is International Women’s Day, so here’s a thread about how discrimination against women intersects with linguistic injustice. I’ll draw on an example from Tibet. #IWD2019
Background context is that Tibetans in China speak a number of different languages, but state policy recognizes only one. What we have here is state-sponsored language denialism.
The Tibetan public in China & around the world largely reproduces the state’s position, claiming that the diversity merely relates to ‘dialects’ of a single language. See my pinned tweet for why this is a problem.

International Women's Day coincided with @EricaKomisarCSW's book crossing my path again. The glib platitudes circulating while anyone who challenges the consensus is shouted down got me thinking (oh dear).
For a decade I worked as a nanny, at daycare, and in foster care. I've avoided speaking about what I observed b/c I love the children I've cared for & preferred to focus on that. Who wants to argue w/ people emotionally motivated to interpret facts in the most comfortable way?
But everyday I'm bombarded on social media by people using children to push agendas. To guilt others while claiming to hate guilt. To judge while rejecting judgment. What happens is the actual children, become props for the agenda of others while caregivers are silent or ignored.
