Long Reads Sunday #37.

Some weeks, LRS is aaaaall news. This week, however, the crypto community came *hard* with research, analysis, and debate so thoughtful you’ll hope the bear market never ends. 🔥

Carve out some *serious* time for this. Thread👇
2/ On the topic of the bear market, one of the commonly held sensibilities of the past year is that while users might not be flocking to crypto, developers are. @cburniske argues here that it’s because “can’t be evil” matters more to them.
3/ Turns out, this sensibility about devs is correct. According to some amazing new research from @ElectricCapital, the number of devs working on public coins has doubled in 2 years - more than 4k devs contribute code to 2.8k projects.

Morrison’s idiotic statement about gender equity - that women shouldn’t succeed at the expense of men - matches his previous comments about wealth inequality. This is his ideology - we shouldn’t help the vulnerable if it hurts those better off. A thread👇🏻
In fact these statements tell you all you need to know about Morrison’s political priorities. In a nutshell, he sees progressive policies as a threat to the entitlement of the already well-off. He sees progress as a bad thing as he wants to maintain the status quo.
This ideology impacts every single policy area. He wants the unemployed punished and the NewStart allowance hard to get because he sees welfare as a burden on richer tax payers. He doesn’t want the vulnerable ‘hurting’ the well off.

Today, Trump lied(again)about his hypocritical, fake support for women on International Women’s Day.

Let’s take a walk down memory lane, revisit a few of the ways Trump & his regime has, in his own words, “respected” & “honored” women over the past 2 years…

@WendyWokoma @AskAwayHealth @WHO Thank you for those ideas!
Simple, but practical and EVERYONE can adopt.

So we are done for tonight!
Of course the conversation doesn’t end here. We know that gender inequality affects a woman’s economic state and impacts her health.

@WendyWokoma @AskAwayHealth @WHO If women are poorly represented at decision making, will our real needs be met?
It’s important to note that gender equality does NOT disrespect any man - rather it allows for harnessing of the potential in women to be used to allow development for the benefit of all.
#IWD2019
@WendyWokoma @AskAwayHealth @WHO That was such an informative session.
Thanks to our speaker @WendyWokoma for the insightful look at this topic & to everyone who’s joined in the conversation - we appreciate you!

Told “minorities could not learn how to use the cameras” (@nytimes, "When Women in Film and TV Were Looking for That Union Label"), Jessie Maple Patton took the union to court and became the first African-American woman to become a member of @IATSE Local 644 in 1975. (1/4)
In the union, Maple worked as an assistant and operator for several TV stations in New York including WABC, WCBS and WNBC. In 1974, Maple and her husband Leroy Patton started their own production company and began to produce short docs. (2/4) #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2019
In 1981, Maple produced “Will,” the first feature-length independent film produced by an African-American woman. She went on to direct the feature “Twice as Nice” and has been featured in such documentaries as “Sisters in Cinema” (2003) and “Women Behind the Camera” (2007). (3/4)

#BalanceForBetter THREAD: For too long, women in our province have faced barriers to work, unequal pay and high levels of violence.
On #IWD2019 I’m so proud of the concrete steps that @RachelNotley and our government have taken to make REAL, positive change for women.
Steps like:
Creating the first standalone Ministry for the Status of Women in the country.
Proclaiming May as Sexual Violence Awareness Month.
Increasing supports for survivors of sexual violence + increasing funding for women’s shelters. #IWD2019
We passed Safer Spaces legislation allowing Albertans experiencing domestic violence to break a lease and flee their homes. This helped over 400 people in the first year after it was passed.
We covered the cost of abortion pill so it is free to all women who need it. #IWD2019

The most extraordinary of women get all the (deserved) praise. Many of us, however, are mediocre, and the world is a cruel place for women who haven’t extraordinary brilliance, resilience, or persistence. We need a world for that works for those women, too #iwd2019
Much like mediocre men can coast, women need to be able to be mid in peace as well. Even those hashtag-amazing among us have off-days at work or home, and a more just world will see us not punished nearly as cruelly for our slip-ups. #iwd2019
I’ve been thinking about Billie King, who had to win a man Bobby Rogan (or whatever his name was) for women’s tennis to be taken seriously. But what if she’d lost? That would’ve put hundreds more women generations ahead back. Why should that be? #iwd2019

Happy #IWD, folks. Today, @jkenney & @Alberta_UCP will to try to tell you they love women, they support women, they defend women. Let’s revisit the short 2 yr history of the party and their action on women’s issues - because we all know that actions speak louder than words #ableg
One: @JasonNixonAB, UCP House Leader fired a woman for speaking up about sexual harassment. Nixon was her boss and he fired her for speaking out. #MeToo
Two: Every single member of the @Alberta_UCP caucus walked out on a historical bill to protect women while they access healthcare. They walked out not once, not twice, not five times, BUT TWELVE TIMES while MLAs debated legislation.

Razan Zaitouneh believed in the universality of freedom and human rights, but it was only through very local battles that she thought such values could acquire life and meaning. #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2019 #Douma4
Razan Zaitouneh had raised chants against the #Assad family when, for most Syrians, the mere mention of the president or his father was reason enough to shudder with fear. #Douma4

1/10. HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD IN 10 EASY STEPS

This week, the Danish Justice Minister called for new legislation in Denmark that recognises the simple fact that sex without consent is rape.

But this didn't happen by chance.

It resulted of some brilliant campaigning & advocacy
2/10. On Tuesday, rape survivors & activists took the stage in front of an invited audience of 200 journalists, politicians, judges & police officials for the launch of a "bombshell report" revealing Denmark’s “rape culture” & endemic impunity for
rapists. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
3/10 The report - the culmination of months of research - identifies key barriers to justice for rape survivors as flawed laws as well as widespread harmful myths & gender stereotypes. Cultural change is needed but "legislation carries culture" so changing the law was the target.

On this #IWD19, I’d like to share one major experience that shaped my career. It was early in my banking career and I’d been working on a major project which came to a successful end when I was informed that I would be moving to a newly formed team... /1 #InspiringNewDimension
...under the leadership of a female senior colleague who most people had described as cold and hard. So my first thought was fear and trepidation, it turned out to be the turning point of my career, she was a very thorough boss who pushed me beyond limits #inspiringNewDimension
It was the days before all these buzzwords but I suffered from what is now called “impostor-syndrome”, that many women feel. And she reversed this, and continued to give me visibility beyond my peers in other units. We worked very hard and it paid off. #inspiringNewDimension

6 hal kodrati perempuan: Haid, hamil, melahirkan, nifas, menyusui, keguguran. Memberikan hak mereka utk bekerja dan berekspresi tanpa memahami hal2 tersebut adalah omong kosong.
