<even drier> Especially in a community with matrilineal descent, embedded in a larger society in which women taking their husbands' names is still the norm, with intermarriage being a thing.
Not to mention: converts, people from non-Ashkenazi Jewish backgrounds, descendants of people who changed their names, etc.
