Next up is @amir_ansari & @battle_elf taking us through how old tools can be repurposed for qualitative research focussing on @trello

#DR19
Aimee was working in academia and finding it hard to co-ordinate 3 schedules.

Amir's experience conducting research with clients was time consuming and frustrating
So what were all the pain points?
One day 5 years ago, Amir was using @trello and had a moment. There was a better way to research.
When Aimee started Amir introduced her to how to use it, and she loves it.
Why Trello though?
Amir:
Trello is platform agnostic.

Everything from research is on one board and you can invite people to it.

We set up columns for each participant.

As people speak you just need to write & hit enter.
You can have multiple note takers taking notes at the same time for the same users.

Sometimes Amir shares with clients and they start to take notes as well.
If someone's written their notes with word or Google docs you can copy and paste it into a card, it recognises paragraphs and asks if you want to create a new card.
Traceability: you can hover over a card and add your notetakers name on them.

You can quickly add stickers to identify who the user was
Pain points they've been able to bust with Trello.
BUT WHAT ABOUT SYNTHESIS AMIR?

You ask and he is ready to answer.
The coloured labels on the side allow you to create different themes or groups.

You can do a shortcut with numbers to quickly attach a group. Cards can have multiple groups and you can quickly remove incorrectly applied labels.
On the bottom right hand of the card it shows you a log of what happened and when it happened. From when it was written and timestamped so you can find that quote in your recordings.
You've done all your coding and now you want to do synthesis. You can create columns/buckets to drag and drop cards.
When you're finished one task, duplicate the board so you can come back to it untouched if necessary :)
Trello synthesis benefits
If you still like the physical aspects you can export your cards as PDFs and do manual analysis.
You can filter the cards by your codes you can make it easier to conduct analysis.
Analysis recommendations
Now were sharing back to our neighbours what we learned about trello.
